Hi all,
I have decided to upgrade the wheels on my Jayco Penguin to match my Cruiser 16x8 with BFG's. I have ordered new drums and apparently these will fit onto the existing brakes. Is that so? I have also underslung the axle.
My 2nd query is about the spare wheel mounting. I have checked and the wheel does fit onto the existing bracket BUT is it strong enough behind to support the substantial extra weight?
Thanks in advance.

Steve

Hi Steve,
Got no idea about your first question, Having said that, If they know what you want and what it fits, they should fit.
Under "slinging" your axle will help with lift to accommodate the bigger wheels.
With fitting the spare, make sure you have a plate on the inside to distribute the weight across the whole area. This should help in supporting the extra weight.
Other may know more on this. The structural side of these Camper.
Hope this helps.

Hi Phantom. Are your existing drums 5 stud on a 10 inch drum? Should be no problem to convert to a 6 stud drum - hope you are paying no more than $90 each. I did this change to an older model Swan last year. As far as the mounting goes, we came across a Penguin at Dalhousie Springs last year that had lost the spare and bracket due to a failure of the welds on the badly corrugated tracks. Again is yours an on or off road model as this will mean a supposedly stronger bracket on the off roader... Warrie

I would guess that if it is mounted to the rear wall its not stong enough. Every possibioity it will pull straight off. Fitting a large square plate on the inside may actually spread the load better. Or why not look at either moving it to the A frame or on a rear bar modified to suit or does it fit in the front boot ....
