I purchased a Ford Explorer 2004 model 6 manths ago and from day one I had problems. The car was equiped with everything I wished for and very comfortable. However, the first indication of trouble was when I drove it out of the yard the "Service required" indicator came on and the car ran rough.
The explorer is equipped with a systems
check screen and it showed that the oil efficiency was just 47% even though it had been just serviced. I went back to the dealer and queried if the service had in fact been done. After 2 hours of investigation they handed back the car saying the faults had been fixed. After driving just 10km the service light came back on.
To cut the story short I had the car in to the dealer 5 times which totalled 35 days. Between each time in for fixing I found extreme diff whine, clunk when reversing out of a
parking bay like I had run over something, stalling at low speed with loss of steering and brakes, sluggish acceleration, car rolling when handbrake and being placed in Park, shudder when taking off.
In the end I demanded a refund and to the dealers credit they also conceded defeat and provided me with a replacement vehicle. Definitely not a Ford

I drive a Landy that has been faultless and a wag on the
forum suggested that construction of it had been subcontracted out to a Toyota factory. It seems Ford may have subcontracted your car out to a Land Rover factory?

Isn't the Ford Explorer the car that had a massive recall in the US because the fuel tank exploded during minor accidents?
I think the Explorer is a type of citrus fruit.

It was nicknamed "Exploder" because of the tyre issue from the supplier, Firestone. Once a new supplier was found, the Explorer had no more tyre issues. Hardly a fault of the rest of the car, but still unfortunate.

Barnesy ...you may be thinking of the Ford Pinto, which used to explode if the car was rear ended with the left hand indicator on and the fuel tank ruptured.
The Ford Explorer, as chevypower pointed out had issues with the tyres blowing out.

citrus fruit sounds about right Barnesy, wasn't it a
explorers cruise control that took some poor bloke on a unwanted joy ride and didn't they just have a recall in the states because of a brake problem. My brother in-law had one and said he just about had to get a bank loan something was needed for it.Poor sod now drives a pajero...lol..

Sure did. I didn't know anything about
Explorers at the time. I was in the market for a dual cab 4wd but this looked great so I bought it. I am now an authority on Explorer faults. By the way I now have a 2005 Holden Rodeo LT dual bab 4wd. It just took me 6 months to get it.

Good choice. I've had two 4X4 RA Rodeo LT dual cabs. Both great utes, both petrol. The 3.5 litre is a bit thirsty though.

Whats with American build quality? Is it worse than Japanese build quality where accelerators stick to the floor? Or is it where they set up factories in Australia, and Australians forget they are really American companies? I just need a little enlightenment.

Hi Outlaw
I had a Ford Exploder worst car I have ever had, near new 30,000 klms on the clock.
Troubles were.
Timing chain tensioner came loose $3200 6 weeks to repair.
Trouble with the fuel computer $1000 to fix 3 times back to the dealer.
Climate control flap broke $30 part and $1500 to fix 1 week off the road.
All the problems were recalls in US but according to Ford OZ it wasn't the same car as it had the steering wheel on the right hand side.
Result traded the Ford on a Toyota Landcruiser and as I purchased cars for the company I work for I stopped buying fords about 10 per year.
Vowed never to buy another Ford.
You did
well to get rid of the Exploder
Regards
Ted

They are a very
well known Lemon. But do not forget the Japs have also made some lemons eg 3lt Patrol, and the 3lt diesel(4jxi) in the Jackaroo. Mind you with the two Jap vehicles the rest of the vehicle was very good apart from the motor. In the exploders case I do not think it had any redeeming qualities.
Cheers Pete

Thanks everyone for your comments that confirmed that the explorer was not a nice vehicle to be avoided. I am now very happy with my Holden Rodeo LT dual cad 4wd. It is wierd that I can drive it anywhere without problems. Hail the Rodeo.
