i have a small clunk type noise comming from my landcruiser gearbox. it only happens when i put the gearstick in first and then releas the clutch. and it only happens when the oil is hot. its not very consistent though, sometimes its quiet and sometimes its louder and makes the gearstick slightly bump to the left a bit. ( about 10mm measured at the top). has anyone had this type of problem. i am 100% sure its the gearbox and not the diff , transfer case or drive shaft.!

Could it be one of your engine mounts of the gearbox crossmember? If the shifter is moving then the whole gearbox is yes?

Could be the intermediate shaft - it's a common problem on the non turbo 78 and 79 series.
I had a similar in-consistent clunk in my 78 series for over 1 year until it finally went - the intermediate shaft stripped and I had no drive at all. Lucky I was only 10 minutes from
home. Fix was around $3000 as I had a few other things done at the same time.
