Fishing along the Eyre Peninsula

I am planning a trip along the Eyre Peninsula(between Port Lincoln and Fowlers Bay) later this year.
I wondered if anyone can suggest a useful book covering fishing in this area, boat ramps etc.
Cheers
Tony

Yes I have heard there are some very good Whiting and Snapper along this stretch of coast.
Do you know what the fishing would be like in Nov Dec months and if there is a ramp at Fowlers Bay?
Cheers

They launch off the beach at Fowlers Bay.
Beautiful country just west of there.
Scotts is popular for salmon and Mulloway.

"Blowvember" the locals call it, and for very good reason.

We called in there for a few days last November and most days could not even walk on the jetty for fear of being blown off.

Then again the rest of the year is not a whole lot better.

Great spot though.

Tony

Not sure if you need a book but the purists might disagree. It's Salmon territory. Pilchards, ganged hooks, running sinker, beach rod, strong line, and fish the gutters.

Two places I go to.
Locks Well near Elliston (hope you're fit - 300 odd stairs down and back up, and when you're carrying a heap of Salmon back up it's murder!!)
Sheringa Beach – go to most northern section, the ‘Salmon hole’. I haven’t fished here much but I haven’t had any luck along the southern sections.

Elliston jetty has good reputation but I haven't fished there much. Kids enjoy it though.

Great part of the world. Enjoy.

the stairs are ok if you can use them. ive been there when the waves are pounding the base and access is straight up and down the cliffs above the coves.

Further north of locks wells is Talia beach where i pulled in a 22lp snapper just out of a getter. before the beach is the ledge (near the tub) which used to need local knowledge to find (probablly sighnposted now)

the cliffs around Elliston were excellent for decent sweep but I never caught a thing ever off the jetty.

Dolphins beach (now mis named mt camel beach) was ultra consistant for yellow eve mullet and medium salmon

Suggest you buy Ron and Viv Moon's book on the Nullabour. It'll tell you what you need to know for under $30. I have just done the trip you are planning. Cheers

Thanks Leigh, I just saw that book advertised and will buy it. It should be a help in planning my trip. I am combining a desert trip with a fishing trip so takes a bit of research and planning.
Cheers

Hi Tony, everyone's right about the wind, but it's still worth it. Two places I'd suggest are Fishery Bay (a little known place about 24kms from Pt. Lincoln off the road around to Sleaford Bay) and Coffins Bay. Beach and rock fishing anywhere there and always good. You can hire small tinnies etc at Coffins if needed. Have a great time. Jan

Hi Jan,
Thankyou for that advice. I planned on taking a 5.5m boat with me which I was going to store in Ceduna or Fowlers Bay while I did a remote trip. Iwas going to pick the boat up on my return and fish along this coast. From all the positive comments about beach and rock fishing do you think a boat is necessary to fish this stretch of coast well? I am starting to wonder if I need to take the boat.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony, Beach launching generally requires a tractor at most of the beaches where they do not have a ramp (and an old one at that as you are bound to get into the salt water) as the gutters can be quite deep for launching, but that's good for the whiting and other fish. I think you may be better off saving on the fuel and not using the boat, but there is the freedom of getting out there. Bairds Bay is another place that is absolutely great for fishing (especially whiting) and that is reasonably protected, but beach launching again. You'll decide whether to take the boat or not, and you don't have to use it at every beach, you can do some beach or rock fishing from some anyway. If you have a small portable smoker, the sweep that you can catch easily from the rocks, taste so good once smoked. Again, have fun. Jan
