I have a 79 Landcruiser with a fold up camper on the back. Have considered a 4wd Canter but its been suggested they give a pretty hard ride and might shake any camper on the back to bits on corrugated roads.
The Toyota Coasters also seems a bit limited for anything other than bitumen.
Don't like idea of towing trailer or caravan and like to keep the off road options. Am looking at a 4wd Nissan elgrand. They are low to the ground but I imagine that baffles around the bottom part of the vans could be discarded.
Am also prejudices against power windows and automatic transmission which seems a contradiction in terms for a 4wd off roader. Am curious to know if anyone has had any experience with these? And would welcome any sensible thoughts.
Thanks.

Oops! I have an 87 Landcruiser not a 79. Not sure where that came from but the question about the Nissan is what I meant to say.

It would be a
grey import would it not? How are you going to get spares in the bush when you need them?
Cheers

Harryopal,
Its getting harder to not have electric windows.
Have ou thought of a Mitsubishi Delica, Pajero underneath and has some 4WD credibility.
The Nissan is just a 4wd road vehicle.

Harry,
Have you actually driven one of those things? This is one of its reviews:
"The Nissan Elgrand is a luxury van manufactured by Nissan sold in Japan. It is available in seven and eight passenger variants, with rear or all wheel drive. The Nissan Elgrand is a serious people mover, it's features, style, power and luxurious features that far outweigh others, unfortunately with this awe inspiring people mover only being sold in Asian markets, the rest of the world missed out on these quality vehicles."
You will note that its capacity to handle off road situations is not even mentioned. I would be reluctant to drive this thing down the driveway to my old
farm!!! This is NOT a 4wd!!! It seems to be almost the ultimate in people movers but that is all.

I read a good article about the Canter a while ago.

But this is a TRUCK, even compared to the 79 series. Google it and you'll find a lot of reviews.

You've just got half this
forum off side harryopal LOL, as nearly all post 2000, Patrols, Land Cruisers, Pajeros, Jackeroos plus many others would have power windows and a lot of them would also be auto, and all of them fine "real 4wd's"
unlike the vehicle you mention that would be too low to the ground as to negotiate almost any conservation mound as found on many dirt roads.
Does this car look to be a "contradiction in terms for a 4wd off roader" LOL

Iveco have a real 4wd van that would be just the thing for what you want and can be picked up from around $8000 - $24000

Thank you Dave, Tony Teegee, Alex and Patrol & Tony for all your comments. Yes, I suppose I am living in the past looking for wind up windows. I will certainly have a good look later at the various links you have suggested. Even now the Nissan is not looking quite so Elgrand.
Dave, if you happen to come back to this site could you please give me an email address. I happened to read your blog about converting a Toyota Cruiser to 4wd. I have a wife whom I feel I should offer a bit more comoft than our present camping arrangements and the converted Cruiser looks attractive.
Thanks again for all your thoughts and as for my gaffe about wind up windows... bear in mind that my first car was a 1928 Whippet.
