An international team ran one a couple years ago at the Outback Challenge, and it was still going at the end, quite an achievement I say.
But ohhh the cost

Off Track
My hobbies compete with each other, I travel and
camp and collect Old Benzs,
besides the new saloons and new passenger vehicles, they will last for ever. I can walk in buy parts easily for any of my 35 year old models. They are cars that last.
The G wagon may be expensive but as long you maintain it, you will never have to buy another vehicle.
Even the cost is not prohibitive, i am currently rebuilding a 35 year old motor and the cost for parts is not much more than a Australian car.
I have toyed with the idea of buying a 80's G wagon and also looked at a 69 Unimog but until the shed is cleared of sedans it wont happen.

The Gelander will be released in Australia but will be a higher spec than the military versions. There are several variants of this vehicle ranging from hose out to full leather and AMG kit. Sadly it looks like it will be over $100k for something around the same fitout as a higher spec 4WD from most of the others.
But having driven them in plenty of really rough country I would love to be able to afford one as they will still be going strong after all the rest have failed
Regards
RobA
