My Nissan patrol, year 1998 it has a 2.8 turbo diesel y61 engine, the cmbelt has failed can anybody advise me on what damage could have occured? Many thanks dave.

Bent/Broken Valves, Damaged Pistons, possible
bore damage if valves broken, possible head damage if valves broken, possible conrod damage. Depends a bit on what the engine was doing at the time. Idling, fanging etc.

I agree.
Minimum would be bent valves. If problem occurred at low RPM
