With all the thefts recently of GPS's etc in cars, we have decided to look at the Alpine, 7 in 1 GPS that goes back into the dash. It is the model number IVA D106 EV. Just wondering if anyone has one of these or any
feedback on them. They are quiet an expensive unit, but if they work
well, it will be worth the money.
Thanks
Karen

Take a look at
VMS brand products, very versatile, Rhys.

Hi Rhys. Yep we have seen these but they dont go back into the dash like the Alpine one does. When it is in the dash and you look in the car it just looks a stereo in the whole. More compact and less damage that can be done to the screen. They are good though, if thats what you are after.
Thanks

Hi Karen,
I would be wary of any system that required the motorised screen to be out under normal use. I have heard many stories of screens not handling corrugations longterm when in the open position.
I understand that you want a "normal" looking display to discourage theft, but the blank screen of a double DIN player looks very plain when off, hardly likely to encourage theft any more than an Alpine brand name on the radio.
I have a Polaris system and while it does have a motorised screen, its only needed to access the DVD or SD card, so normally its in the closed position. Also, the VMS systems are very good with the lack of motorised tray. While Alpine do the IVA W502EV / W202E double DIN models, I don't think they are capable of running OziExplorer so you may want to look at what type of off-road navigation systems you can use.
Cheers
Captain

Karen I understand what you are worried about but I agree with Captain, the specifications and the lack of moving parts make the VMS a much better option and no more likely to be pinched than any other in my opinion, go and have a look at one in person and see what it's like, hope you sort it out , Rhys.

Hi Rhys, we have seen them, but the screen still sticks out as we don't have the dash like the holdens or the fords. It is going in the old style dash of a new cruiser.
At least with this one it folds back into the dash and it just looks like a car radio from the window. Look, to be honest, I think if they want anything in your car nothing will deter them. I think we will still keep looking at the Alpine at this stage.

Not sure of what dash you are putting it into. Ours is a AVNC 3000 model and its in a 100 series double din dash and it certainly does not stick out.
Expensive, yes. However its fully integrated into the dash and car wiring, and when its off you don't notice anything special about it.

It is going into a 79 series GXL ute. It is the old dash, thank God. Just before they updated the dash in the utes. So we dont have the room that the wagons have got in the dash.

Dont be fooled, these low life scum know exactly what is what, yes wont be so noticable as the windscreen mounted ones, we had one stolen from a 100 series landcruiser sahara, cost was 10g's obviously went through insurance, the system itself was 4g but they also cut the main wiring loom to get it out so required the whole vehicle to be stripped new wiring loom, had to remove the whole dash, dual air control in centre consol etc, massive job was off the road for nearly 3 months including waiting for parts. Problem is they get a tap on the hand for doing what they do, scum should have a finger cut off for every time they thieve something, hope you get the type you want and it stays where it belongs, in your dash...Do they have some sort of security code so that if some low life scum flogs it they need a pin to operate it ?? This is a bit off the topic, but I have a Dash mounted Garmin 660 Nuvi GPS. It's a great little Unit.
I have
my HOME co-ordinances set to the Local Police Station. If for some reason it's stolen, the mongrels may have trouble breaking in at the wrong address.
Regards.

Hi Moto, at the moment we have a Magellen Explorist XL and they are a great unit, but evertime you pull up you have to take it down, then take the holder off the windscreen, then wipe the circle off the windscreen that the holder leaves on there, It gets to be a real pain in the bum when we are travelling 24/7. Then we have another screen for the reversing camera, then we have another screen for the turn by turn, and it takes you 45 minutes to put them out of sight and then put them up again. With the Alpine, you turn the thing off and it folds itself neatly into the dash and out of sight. If only everyone was honest it would make life so much easier................

I don't bother with removing the attachment point- I leave it there, fold it shut, and take the unit with me when I leave the car (you can never have too many things in your handbag!).
One of the best things I saw (although I'd make a terrible criminal) was on a Troopy that was parked at my old work last year- it had a laminated
sign inside the windscreen that said "RELAX! There is no GPS in this car". Made me giggle every morning, and hopefully it worked for him too :)
