SPOT has worked with GPS maker deLorme to develop a system that will allow you to send any text message from anywhere in the world.
SPOT and deLorme
You use the buttons and display on the GPS to write the message and then the GPS uses a wireless link to send to it to
the SPOT.
The SPOT then sends the Text to a satellite which sends it to your desired destination.
It'll be a while before this latest SPOT is for sale.
It'll sure help if you break down but don't have a Satphone or HF - e.g. "Send a new Water Pump for the T....a".
There is still no ability to receive any messages.

'There is still no ability to receive any messages'
Perhaps a Sat Phone or
HF Radio might be the better choice for such features

Looks good Mike.
However :-)) it seems that the President of 'SPOT' is also the CEO of Globalstar.
Don't know if that is a good thing or not. Have not heard of any complaints about the Globalstar sat phones for some time.

SPOT uses the Globalstar Satellites, but only the Receivers in them.
It's the Transmitters in the Globalstar sats that were failing and causing Satphone problems, bu this has no impact on SPOT.

Sounds good for our next level of comms.
Re receiving messages. Maybe we are a bit different but that's fine by us at this stage. We love to get away from the rat race. I know! Its not for all travellers though.
I don't think it will replace a phone etc but as an interim its excellent. Its akin to "How far do you go for comms while in the bush". Just UHF or do you tow a full satellite ground station in the trailer.
We haven't the money yet for a sat phone so we are compromising until then. UHF and ham radio. After the car is fully set up then maybe a spot or if possible, a satphone. Have to wait until then to decide.
