Hi Doug
Yes we went to the
Butterfly gorge a few years back on one of our trips to the Douglas hot springs. Only went the once - rough seasonal track. Nice walk up the sides of the river. We found it easier going to cross over and walk on the other side where there are flood sections with soft sand amongst paper barks rather than take the tourist track scrambling over rocks.
Once there you have to have some flotation as it is quite a swim up to the end. Water was very brown and always makes you a bit wary if you come from the NT. I know it is a long way inland but they still get crocs at
Katherine.
I just wait until I hear a German tourist jump in then I figure it is OK. They seem to taste better. Good fun walk and swim. Not as spectacular as
Twin falls was. No big
sandy beach but a worthwhile thing to do if you are staying at Douglas hot springs.

Hi Doug
I enjoyed looking at your photos. Travelling through the north of Australia, we realised just how much preparation had gone into defending Australia, and how far inland the bombing came. After spending a night on Fenton
airstrip we went to Douglas Hot Springs for a few days last August. Some travellers had recommended
Butterfly Gorge and we went, but did not think it warranted the time driving in. There is a lot more water coming through in your photos than we saw, but it looks rather stirred up and murky. We walked over the top looking down on
the pool at first, then rather than try and climb down a 'goat track' we went back and followed the creek
line which was a pleasant walk with some rather large melaleuca trees. Climbing through slimy rocks into
the gorge was not fun, and those who went a lot further saw next to no butterflies are were also disappointed. It may be different another time of the year when the water is flowing. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the hot springs
campground.

It was late July when we were there and the water was certainly flowing - although not in waterfalls as appear in Doug's photos. We had a very refreshing swim. As you can see the water was a brilliant green.

Hi Teege
There was a barely discernible trickle coming through, and comparing your photos to ours, the water level is quite a bit lower in ours, with rocks showing which are not visible in yours, but similarly green water. Our photos are all from the top. Quite a pretty spot, but nothing special compared to other wonderful
places around the northern NT.
