In relation to Steves question can anybody tell me why i go thru so many glass tubes it is an old companion and it is starting to get expensive. It only breaks after i turn it off.Thanks.

Darren, I am assuming you are getting a hole in your mantle that is heating one spot and my experience is they crack after as they cool off. Read my reply to Steve for a stronger mantle part number. Grant

Cut your losses and ditch it. Buy a Versalite and a 17ah sealed lead acid battery for the most trouble free ligting you could imagine.

Thanks to both replies.After some thought i believe both of you were right,i am looking for better mantels and while im there i"ll pick up a versalite.Thanks again.

Darren, We had the same problem with a SMALL tube (150 Candle Power, from memory). I decided the problem was that the mantle and metalwork insode was just too close to the glass, and the glass couldnt cope with the heat when turned off.

We solved it by buying a bigger one (300 to 400 candle power) and running it at a lower light level. It hasnt cracked one yet.
