In relation to Steves question can anybody tell me why i go thru so many glass tubes it is an old companion and it is starting to get expensive. It only breaks after i turn it off.Thanks.

Darren, We had the same problem with a SMALL tube (150 Candle Power, from memory). I decided the problem was that the mantle and metalwork insode was just too close to the glass, and the glass couldnt cope with the heat when turned off.
We solved it by buying a bigger one (300 to 400 candle power) and running it at a lower light level. It hasnt cracked one yet.
