G'Day,

Getting a "pinging" noise like you used to get if you put unleaded into a super engine. Not a lot, just a bit, mainly under load, going up a hill in 4th or 5th gear.
Don't think Im letting the rev's get too low. It's an 09 model running on 91 unleaded.
Has anyone out there got any ideas??

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,
The engine management systems on cars these days are pretty sophisticated,
I would have though that the computer would pick up pinging through the knock sensor and adjust accordingly.
Maybe a loss of performance.
Have you checked your fluids, a hotter than normal motor can also cause pinging.
What is the manufacturers fuel recommendation.
Is it E10 your using ?

Will

Engine is running at normal temp, I agree about the engine management.
Recommended fuel is min 91 oct unleaded, no Im not using E10, not keen on it. Next fill I might try premium.
I could be letting the rev's get a little low under load, as this is when it seems to happen.
Thanks for your ideas/comments.

One of the kindest things you can do for a petrol engine designed to run on UL is to use Premium UL. Because of the absence of certain additives (haven't got a clue what they are called) it will burn cleaner, keep your fuel system a lot cleaner and in my experience the engine oil stays heaps cleaner between changes (change every 5,000 km). Some people also claim to get improved fuel economy and performance. that hasn't been my experience. I use a couple of super strong 'rare earth' magnets wrapped around the fuel line from the tank. Sure makes me feel like I use a lot less fuel !!

Timing slightly too far advanced will cause "pinking", particularly when you accelerate

Barry, sorry this is late, been away at work and got back last night.

Pinging starts at around 1800-2000 revs, and yes if I lift my foot off it does go away.

Probaly be a good idea to change down sooner

Going uphill in 5th probably doesnt do it a lot of good.

Yea, I was thinking that as well. I was taking it easy, trying to see what sort of economy I could acheive, maybe I need to go a bit harder.

Run a slightly thicker oil. It has something to do with the valves. I used to have the same issue in another 4x4.

Tim this is not the way to solve the problem. It may help in the short term to disguise the problem but the extra load on bearings will not change.

Need to solve the problem IMHO

I notice this in my Jackaroo also (3.5L V6), up a hill or under load, just over 2200rpm give or take.

My mechanic recommended putting premium in every 3rd tank or so, I've been doing this and noticed that when running on premium I don't notice the pinging.

Worth a try.
