Our 1995 3.2V6 developed a slight misfire a couple of weeks ago, which didn't appear to effect the vehicles running until the other day, it now has permanent misfire. I've put new plugs & leads in but it still has the misfire and the exhaust has a noticeable flutter/pop.
Anyone got any ideas? (be nice)

Is the
check engine light on? Really the only option is to take it to a competent mechanic as it could be one of a hundred things such as sucking air arround the inlet gasket, blocked egr, maf needs replacing. Personaly I have found you can waste hours looking for it when a mechanic with a proper scangauge will find it in minutes.
Cheers Pete

The last time I had petrol car that was misfiring I took it to several experts and they could not find the problem, then one dark nite I lifted the bonnet and there was it, a faulty lead that a garage with all hi-tech gear could not find. Need to be very dark, just worth a try

A miss fire with a pop or a chuffing noise from the exhaust can indicate a burnt exhaust valve. To
check for valve leakage disconnect the centre lead from the distributer so the engine will not start. Have someone spin the engine over with the starter and at the same time holding full throttle and listen at the exhaust. If there is a chuffing sound it will be an exhaust valve burnt out, if the same noise is from the engine air intake it is an intake valve burnt out. Forgot to mention you should remove the air filter before the
test as
well.

My 1995 3.2V6 Jackaroo had a permanent misfire that I never got to the bottom of... At idle the misfire was always very regular (about once every 1.8sec, or 10x per 18sec.). Not long after I bought the car, I had the it looked at for the misfire and the mechanic reckoned it was dirty injectors so I had him pull them out and clean them. He reckoned he'd fixed it but it was still there. It never seemed to affect the performance in my case though.
