I have a good quality 100W bifold unit from ABR. Yep it's expensive but more than happy. I am going to buy a 120W solar panel from an ebay supplier based in
Melbourne as it appears good value. I'll be able to provide decent evaluation and
feedback after 12 months or so. Thinking of matching it to the new Redarc Smart Start BMS which the savings will no doubt help pay for.
Cheers Mick

Mike ,
How big an area do you have to put the 120 watt panel in / on ?
Reason for asking is - would a 160 watt Poly panel 1600 X 800 mm fit ?
I would be prepared to supply one for the price of the 120 for evaluation
purposes ..
Let me know
Rgds

Yes, probably a reasonably big difference in performance too :)
I would like to see various 100 Watt (or 80 Watt) panels all set up under controlled conditions and see what the results are in *LOW light* conditions, not the maximum set-up for best performance numbers, but the average to normal use conditions.
I would think the elcheapo panels would have trouble keeping up with the renown leaders in the Solar field under low light conditions.
I've asked one extremely knowledgeable member a few times now about the brand of panel he's bought, when he posted he believed they were not as efficient as he believed it should be under LOW light conditions, to date I've had no reply :)
I thought it would be good to know what brand he bought, so other people did not have to suffer the same problem in low light conditions.

Can't help with a controlled conditions evaluation but on my previous rig I had a 'name' brand mono panel and later added a cheapie of the same size. I could detect no noticeable difference in their performance in any conditions. What did make a significant difference though in all light conditions was when I later bought a more expensive 'name' regulator.
Cheers ....... Alan

I bought a set of 'el cheapo' 120w panels thru eBay. The panels performs up to (and beyoind) specs and expectations.
The 'archilles heel' on the cheapo sets seems to be the regulator/controller and the sub-standard cable size.
I uprated the controller to a decent one (not necessary the most expensive), and re-cabled the thing.
Test over the weekend (sunny day Sat./overcast on Sun.), and monitoring the performance- now all good !!

I bought a no name 80 watt panel off Ebay last year for under $400 delivered. I installed it a few weeks ago and it seems to have the same output as the other two BP 80 watt panels. It hasn't been over any rough roads yet so the jury is still out on it. When I have had it a while I will pass on results.

do a search on ebay solar here, and you will come up with some good advice too.
some sellers on ebay have been known to sell under rated panels, ie give you a 60 when you order an 80w panel.
Search, have a bit of a read, make an informed decision.
