Please could people tell me the depth of the space behind the 3rd row of seats in various models of Prado (at the height of the bottom of the window).
What I am looking for is the distance between the back of the seat and the rear door.
Reason being - I'd like to know if any fridge will fit in the back of a Prado.
I had an 80 series Cruiser which had just enough room for a 40l Waeco fridge (but not quite enough for an Engel 39l one).
Thanks,
Geoff

Hi Geoff
My 120 series Prado has 930mm from the back of the seat to the rear door. I have a 32 litre Engel fridge / freezer (about 720mm long including the handles at each end) which fits easily. Hope that helps.
Regards
Rob

Just correcting my reply. That measurement is from the 2nd row of seats. I have removed the 3rd row of seats.

Hi Geoff - what model Prado? in my 90 series (year 2000) i can fit my waeco 40lt in sideways and close the door. The seat needs to be upright not leaning back. You would think both of the later models would have even more room.

Extra to the space you need - for your info, you should run a new heavier cable to the back to keep the fridge running. The standard Toyota wont run the waeco with engine off. The Waeco Raps R12U works perfectly to fix this and looks fantastic too. Costs up to $119 rrp by Waeco. (A member on here can supply them for you if you need details let me know. No affiliation - just a happy customer thats received excellent advice from him) If you get an error code shown on the Waeco fridge lights you will soon know you need a new cable. You will get more info and see them here: RAPS R12U Very easy to install too. cheers....

Thanks that's very helpful.
I did not specify a Prado model because I do not have one.
I'm wondering if a Prado will be big enough or whether I need a 100 series.
I presume that the 3rd row seats are not very comfortable in the upright position, is that right?
Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff

The third row seats are quite comfortable if you're younger than six years old. But that's about it. From memory, the 120 series has less space behind the third row seats than the 90 series.

Hi again Geoff

The third row seats in any 4WD are really only for children but we have had older people in ours from time to time. Really depends on length of journey and size of person. You should take your kids with you on a test drive and see for yourself. My brother always had Pajeros until he got a rotten one then after driving a Prado wont ever go back. His kids couldd not believe how much better both rear seats were in Prado to their old Pajeros (he had plenty of them, each new model when they came out) My series Prado has seating for 8, latest Prado (150 series) is now seating for 7 same as Pajeros. But the second row slides back and forth which is great. If you get earlier one, get a Grande just to get the dual air conditioning - front and rear.

I will check tomorrow about the fridge and seats for you as my fridge is in there, but seats are still out on floor as i have been lazy since last holidays and not refitted them. Will double check sometime tomorrow and let you know.

I never had any of my kids complain about seating position with fridge etc in there. I think you would only have one up to 9 or so unless they were small with fridge behind it. Keep in mind if its not the fridge it will be something else there to stop seat going back unless its packed elsewhere. It does become easier as they get older to split the rear seats and only use one side. Then it comes down to if you are travelling at night and the fridge is noisy from cycling on and off etc. I have 3 kids (eldest now 19) and as they got older we used to put one in very back and other two in second row so they all had their own space. Now only 2 come and soon to be only one - so will then have plenty of space for all lifes essentials - beer, beer and beer ;))

cheers....

Hi Geoff,

I have a 120 series and I wouldn't even try to put my 40L engel behind the 3rd row seats. The width would not allow the fridge even with the seats upright. If you only have one overflow (child) to sit in the back, tehn you could aways split the rear seats which would allow the fridge on one side (provided you tied it down for safety purposes -which you would do anyway).

G'day Geoff. Just put a seat in and did a measure. At window height 23cm and at floor 29cm. That must be why I leave my seats out most of the time.LoL. Bob.

Hi Geoff - just checked my waeco 40 lt in with seats in and sorry i got it wrong earlier, fridge wont fit behind third row seats. I have a cover on my fridge so that makes it a little bit bulkier too. I must have been thinking of my smaller 24lt Waeco - sorry about that, i was sure we used to use the larger one in there with seats in - obviously not.

With one seat in only the 40 litre will fit sideways at the back between the installed seat and side wall of prado leaving plenty of room between back of second seat and the fridge for storage. Think it would be easier for you to do a test drive/run in one with family on seats and fridge in too. Good luck with search for new vehicle, cheers....
