Hi

My wife and I are looking into buying a 100 series Turbo Diesel. I had a 80 series diesel 1HZ manual about 10 years ago but moved overseas so let it go. We're getting back into it now and I am pretty sure I am gonna pay the extra for the turbo this time (the 1HZ was a bit of a slug). The only problem is that there are not many manuals out there. They all seem to be autos.

Would anyone care to share their experience with the 100 series TD auto transmission? Pros and cons?

Thanks heaps

I dont know about the 100 series, but I brought a Prado with an auto. As a manual devotee for the past 20 years I was reluctant at the begining, but the first 50 metres into the bush changed my mind forever. No more hill stalls/starts, easier to crawl over rocks/tree roots etc etc. Sure, you cant crawl down hill in first without it running on, but I'll wear that. Buy it, bang on an oil cooler and I'd be surprised if you weren't happy.

Good luck.

post sept 2002 the TD100 got the A750F 5 speed auto. try ringing around the auto tranny companies-Id be suprised and very curious to hear of failures. These have quite a reputation for strength and crisp changing. Mine has 190000k's and still changes like new.
Personally I havent heard of any failures and I asked the question on several forums for info on failures and got not a single response from memory.

Coming from a history of driving both auto and manual vehicles from Army transporters to plain old civilian vehicles. From landrovers to interstate semi's I now apppreciate the huge advance in automatic boxes. Especially as we now have one with our 4.2 TD as well. I even had an auto FB and an auto XD.

Talk about "plug and play". Vote one for the auto TD 4.2. Preferably the Toyota 100 series 4.2 TD auto. No way would I go back to a manual.

Another vote for the auto. The 5-speed in the TD 100 is excellent.

I have the 5 speed auto. It's tops.

As "reversemullet man" said, no more stall starts. Yes it does want to take off a bit when going down steep hills, but correct gear selection and feathering the brakes fixes that. Don't forget the handbrake too. Comes in very handy for extra braking.

Go the auto!!

Not only bush but much better on the beach too in my opinion, they just crawl off easier.
Cheers.

great advice. I think your comments have convinced us to keep our options open and look at some autos.

Look at it in the perspective of time + $ , if you live in the city ,traffic lights every block or so , pushing in the clutch pedal all the time , wear and tear , ,,There is nothing a new generation auto box is not better at than a manual box bar hill decent and that is easilly overcome ,,,

Got to agree, if there is one thing that I hate the most is driving in the city with my manual. Stop/Start foot on the clutch, foot off the clutch. Especially at peak time.
I don't go to Brissy often, but when I do I dread it.
