I was going to Alice via the Diamatina However with all this rain I dont think that area will be dry by May.

Alternative route selection.

1. I am looking at going to Yunta , Milang ( this also goes very close to a large lake area Could be a problem) turn left at Ootna Ruins on to the Baratta Road then to Hawker

2. Peterborough then via Orroroo and the Johnburgh Rd

3. From Orroroo proceed via the Orroroo Road to Hawker

What is the best given the current conditions out there.

I intend to spend several days in the Flinders and then going up the O/D track

Thanks

I don't think you will be going through the Simpson in May at this stage

Don't panic to much, No.1,No.2 and No.3. roads you want to travel can be cut at anytime as well.

The are usually only cut off for a day or two in normal conditions at the worst but at the moment any road anywhere in Australia could be cut off including good sealed ones.

Areas can dry out very quickly and I think you are stressing over nothing at the moment, best thing to do is work out three travel routes and check it the day you are leaving.

Three years ago roads around Hawker and Orroroo were impassable and in some places it has taken 2 plus years to repair.

May is still two months away, work it out when it gets closure.

Yep you could be right. Could be all ok by May
I was not going through Simpson. Had planned Quilpie to Boulia then via Plenty H/Way.
This could still be a little soggy in the Channel Country
Thanks Wayne

Not knowing where you were coming from and the Diamatina is a big creek.

The Plenty is still closed and would be your quickest way, coming down to Hawker may add 2000K to your trip.

Were doing a trip in May into the Simpson and we don't know what way to go in or out, we may have to go to Alice and come down from the Plenty.

The Diamantina is a big creek and the problem is its getting bigger by the day :-)

We had planned to do the loop From Newcastle to Alice Via the Plenty highway
Mac Ranges, The Rock, and back home via Copper Peddy and Broken Hill.

If we cant use the Plenty we will do the Flinders Ranges as previously stated.

The Simpson may be a problem for you in May ??

Cheers

Wayne, I know that swampy area around Milang, and that may be a problem, but the rest of that track should be OK unless they have rain a week or so before you go.

It might be an idea to ring one of the stations along that track and get the latest info. The post office at Yunta would know too, the mail goes out from there.

If things a still a bit soggy up north of the Flinders, it may mean you have to backtrack from Hawker to Pt. Augusta to get to Alice.

Thanks fir the info. I will check it out when the time comes closer.
PITA if I have to go via Port Augusta and up the highway. Not what you would call an OUTBACK ADVENTURE :-)

Cheers
