Hi Folks,
Thanks to every one who helped with advice on the UHF radois, I ended up getting the GME TX4400. It does a bit more than I need it too but it has a front facing speaker and fits nicely in the dash.
I found out it has 20 or so 'receive only' channels does any one know what is out there and if it's worth while tuning it in? I know the police are now on digital, but is it worth the time to tune others in and does any one know of any frequencies that work?
Cheers
Nik

Probably not worth it Nik unless your into that sort of thing.
The 4400 requires a programming cable (cheap) and some freeish software.
If you have a local CFA etc your like to keep Tabs on it can be useful, I have seperate receiver which monitors all that stuff and after some initial fun value it falls into disuse.
Police in country (Vic) still use some UHF cb as emergency when the gee wiz digital can't get thru.

The 4400 is getting a bit long in the tooth and does not have a very wide band of receive frequencies like many newer models.(Only 465 -485 Mhz) These frequencies can be programmed from the front panel, however. Cheers -Steve

Hi Steve
Our replies seem to say different things and I'd like to get it right for the record.
My 4400 was one of the first made and a running change may also have been possible, it has a programming cable.
Could you confirm if I have read your reply correctly , I read it as saying that 4400 receive channels can be programmed from the front panel.

From memory the early model 4400 were not able to be programmed from the front panel. The first 4400 I had came with a manual that mentioned a serial number before which the front panel programming did not work.Later models can definately be programmed from the front.-Steve

Whilst the Police have gone digital in the main centres you can still listen in in some country towns and cities - for example Wagga.

the radio is built to handle a number of frequencies that can be programmed according to the license held by the owner. CB licence extends to forty allocated channels where you can transmit and recieve. The other channels you can listen to but could be subject to a fine if you change the program and start transmitting.
Anyway why would anyone want to transmit on commercial license paid up channels where the users would not entertain being interfered with.

One of my units recieves on channels #41 to #60.
It is common to pick up the police or emergency
services in many regional areas.
