Gday...
We have been at our current park for around four weeks and have attracted some unwanted visitors - tiny little black ants.
We had been keeping a watchful eye externally and still cannot see any outside in the area, or entering the van anywhere - but then again I am getting older and eyesight not as good as it was.
They only seem to come out in the van of an early evening, wander around aimlessly - even avoiding the sugar bowl or any other food source, appearing from crevices or from around windows. They seem to disappear late in the night and don't appear during the day.
I assume they must now have a little home in our wall cavity somewhere.
Is there a known way to have them decide to vacate and set up house somewhere else?
We are confident they are only the little nuisance ones and not the termite type.
Looking forward to the usual helpful suggestions from the forum.

Cheers
Julie & John

Hi there,

Nothing worse than ants in your van (we have had real bad probs with Singapore ants) different things have worked for us.

We have used antrid -
ant traps
Crunchy Crawler - stinks real bad however seems to work
talc powder on the feet ect seems to help

Cheers

Having ants move inside like that usually means that wet weather is on the way .....

I guess the ants where correct given what happened on the weekend :)

A spoonful of borax mixed with some juice from can of fruit, or a little bit of honey,
Make both.
They are attracted by roasted chicken, so keep that in mind.

We have had lots of ants lately and I mix Borax with sugar, it works a treat.

Even just borax or boracic acid powder straight, sprinkled over the hole if you can find it. It works pretty quickly.

Chemspray, Ant, spider and Cockroach as per the instructions in a spray & wipe bottle.

Use a mask and do not use if you have a breathing medical condition. Check with vans on either side before spraying as well. Nasty stuff.

Place jam jar lids or similar around the outside of your van with honey in them. The litle blighters love the taste, decide to jump in and then workout that they can't get out.
Chemical free solution just in case the local wildlife are feeling hungry too.

Hi J & J

when i bought my current van home for the first time i noticed we had ants in it everywhere too. tried a few things but in the end i went and bought a bottle of the ant rid. I opened it just being a sticky beak wanting to look inside to see what it was like, and done lid back up and put it back in the disposable plastic shopping bag and put it in the sink under the cover thinking i would get around to doing it the next weekend. Well I forgot about it (it being stored in the garage at home) and when i found the plastic bag a couple months later, i opened it up wondering what was in it, to find an empty ant rid bottle and lots and lots of dead ants. I dont know how they got to the stuff with the lid done back up but it worked and killed them all off and never had a problem since. Maybe you could do same and being on the road, put the bag in some area in van out of way and see if it gets rid of yours - maybe even in the front boot or tied up under the van?? Who knows, cheap and easy way to do it as it worked for me - all accidently at the time but ended up being the easiest job i have ever done (or not done depending on how you look at it). Good luck....

Hi J+J
we had an ant problem and also thought they had set up house in the walls so I drilled holes in the walls behind cupboards or any other cover and sprayed Baygon ,it took weeks for the smell to go and did not get rid of the ants.
After nearly turning the van inside out we found their nest behind the stone cover on the front it was hugh once cleaned out no problems since.

Add a smear of grease 1 inch wide over every thing that connects to the ground except the tyres, I've never had travel up a wheel, as for the ones already in, if you find a nest spay them with WD40

Get yourself some Ant Rid the type that is a small square bait and place a couple in strategic spots as directed.
Leave the baits for at least 24hrs before spraying as when they touch the baits and return to the nest the returning ants kill the others by contamination. You would have seen ants carrying off their dead at some time and this is how they contaminate all.
Also buy some outdoor surface spray and spray all caravan support legs plus jockey wheel then behind each wheel near the axle and you will get rid of them.
And remember that ants often drop from trees onto your van.
We had an infestation once and by using the above methods they were gone in a couple of days.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

If you want a non-toxic solution fo rinside food cupboards, ants won't walk across talcum powder.

Mike

I use talcum powder. I also put it around the camper and it keeps them out.

It is cheaper than the toxic alternatives.
