Sounds like a question for the LCOOL forum.

You'll get your answer there.

aquilon, I would agree with Andrew about asking on the lcool forum. The only piece of info that I have that may or not be of help is that as far as I know the 1HDT engine has the same tensioner setup as the 1HZ. I have just gotten hold of a 1HD-FT to replace my 1HZ with and have found that they have a quite different belt tensioner and I'm sure that this design and method of function would not let the belt jump a tooth if the engine were to be run backwards. Whether this tensioner would fit the earlier 1HD-T I don't know but it may be worth checking out.

The 1HDT has the same tensioner as the 1HZ , so if the 1HDFT set up fitted YOUR 1HZ it will fit my 1HDT..Thanks mate...John W

Sorry about not getting back sooner........house maintenance...YUK...

fisho... got mine from a local wrecker (Perth WA) just happened to be in the right place at the right time, he actually called me about a different matter.
It was in a late '97 80 series that was a statutory write off. Cost involved a bit of horse trading so actual dollars does not really mean much (if you get my drift)

aquilon, I'm not sure if I am reading you right (which is quite possible..lol) but I didn't mean that I was trying to fit the 1HD-FT tensioner to the 1HZ or vice versa
I am fitting the whole engine (1HD-FT) in place of the 1HZ engine. I had the timing belt cover off to check the condition of the belt and tensioner bearing. A sticker on the cover from a local Toyota dealer said that they had recently been changed but being both anally retentive and an untrusting old bastard I had to have a sticky beak. It was during my explorations that I noticed the 1HD-FT tensioner had a fluid filled spring tensioned system that would not let the belt jump no matter what direction the engine turned. Quite different to the 1HZ setup. As previously said I am not sure if this later one will fit either the 1HZ or your 1HD-T but if it does it may fix your concerns.

Good luck mate
