Talked to a guy about a year ago who had one fitted to a 100 series - he had an overheating issue.

I had thought about getting on fitted to my Patrol one day....the 6.5 as opposed to the 6.2

However, have come across 2 people that would not fit a 6.5 again (clients).

Apparently the 6.5 are great business for the two Diesel Injection Specialists in Perth for replacing injectors, pump, and piston rings (oil consumption greater than the 200 series and ongoing). But have been told by one of these Specialists once they are fixed they are super. Shame Brunswick do not do it right....from what I have heard.

They may have improved since the two I know of, but the advice of too many people have turned me off them.

But maybe this guy has had all the issues sorted....assuming the same issues as a 6.2.

Good Luck.

Brett......

The 6.5 has a better reputation than the 6.2. The 6.2 is prone to some problems like stretched head studs leading to gasket failures. Cracks around the main bearing area. The main bearings are a 4 bolt system.10 long and 10 short. I forget which but GM no longer supply one lot. They need to be replaced when rebuiding. The engine block is basically a petrol engine casting. Still has the distributer hole which has been blanked off. All this is fresh in my mind as I have been involved in helping a young friend who is rebuilding one at present. We ended up getting aftermarket bearing studs and head studs from the States. Fuel pumps are bad news to service also.

I have a 6.5 with no problems at all, early over heating was the radiator. I tow a van and she never overheats.

The 6.2 and 6.5 engines are not a petrol block at all and as for oil consumption the normal use is 1/2 a litre per 5000k. The earlier 5.7 l was the disaster.

Some do have an issue with their injector pumps, but I believe this is mainly caused by the engine coming in from the states with big K's on it and either not being reconded properly, or nothing done to it at all.

The engine is also only 15 kilos heaver than the 2 h it replaced.

Have a good one

Pretty much a bulletproof engine if looked after, regular oil and filter changes and clean air.
The one in my Humvee is now 22 years old, has done around 300k and uses approx the oil as quoted above.
My Humvee spent the first 15 years of its life in Saudi Arabia with the US Airforce, Desert Storm etc so you would expect some wear issues.
Until this time last year the engine had not been touched since initial assembly. Before setting out on a 4 month/20k trip to the west I decided to give it a 21st birthday even though it was running perfectly. I fitted a new injection pump, injectors, water pump, timing chain, harmonic balancer, fuel pump (mechanical), belts and radiator hoses. All that for less than $AU1k, try that on a Nissan or Cruiser.
Parts are cheap as, many available locally and things like pumps and injectors 4 days delivery from the US. Typical price for new inj pump around $AU400, set of injectors(8 including return lines, clips and new gasket washers) $AU200.Water Pump $45, full engine gasket kit $35 etc etc.
I'm quite happy to pass on details of sources in the US for parts.
The 6.2 and 6.5 were designed as a diesel from the start and are not a converted petrol block.

Hey Ozhumvee, would I be able to get those sources for the chev parts off you, my 6.2 is due for a freshen up and the parts prices you listed are less than half what I've been able to find locally, also do you know if they sell complete engines, I may upgrade to the 6.5 L if they're not too dear. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
