I have a scorpion 900watt 2 stroke at the moment, bit noisy and uses 4 lts for 6 hours, and that runs the fridge and lights ok just have to put 250w load on to keep the volts up, so hence a new one

Hi Rod

Havent a lot of experience with small gennies but i've had the SHX1000 for a couple of years.

Use her mostly round the block when the powers out or with power tools, always reliable starts first go even after no use for extended periods.

Doesn't like the Jackhammer(but then who does) even if she overloads its just a question of turning off then back on again.

Lights, tellies etc no probs, have heard quieter ones but they've been smaller honda's.

I believe this has a honda motor as well so its got pedigree.

Taking her on the CSR in a couple of weeks we'll see.

Have a friend with an engel gen, it is the same motor as my Honda only green, same dials, sockets, overload mech, the works, at half the price. I wish I had known that when I bought mine. The parts are identical thus interchangeable. You should not be dissappointed

Maybe looks the same and the engine may be Honda but the actual generator has, I understand, a modified sine wave output while the honda is true sine wave. Some equipment has an aversion to modified sine wave. And, as you may have noticed, full sine wave inverters are nearly twice the price of power or modified sine wave inverters. That could explain the price difference.

"The parts are identical thus interchangeable."

Incorrect, just becaue something looks the same doesn't make it the same.

The electrical output of an Engel is square wave, the output of both the Honda and the Yamaha is sine wave. The Engel website will even tell you the output is square wave if you are prepared to read the fine print.

The ability to generate square wave from a rotating AC machine takes real talent, it's of dubious value but it does take real talent.

There's a reason the Honda and Yamaha are considerably dearer than the Engel and its got absolutely nothing to do with profit margins.

Its not realy tallent Geoff, its Costs, Allthese inverter generators generate 350-400V AC at high frequency hence the ability to vary engine speed with out varying the out put freq fixed @ 50 cycles. The Honda,Yamaha,Kipor generators have an inverter module that chops up the rectified 350/400v into a pure sine wave at exacly 50 cycles & fully regulated 240V ac out put this cost money more components. The squarewave generator is basicly the same principal BUT a square wave output is much cheaper & easier to desighn & build. Thats why 12Vdc to 240V inverters that are pure sine wave are dearer than there cheap square wave inverters. Cheers Daryl

Wow talk about a can of worms !!

Rang an Engel to see if I have been sadly misusing the genny for the past two years and was informed that my crime was not plugging my Engel fridge and other bits and pieces into a powerboard rather than directly into the genny.

Apparently the Engel Genny's were developed to run the Engel Fridges. ( It actually indicates this on the website).

I have no opinion regarding the product or any other apart from the fact it hasn,t let me down or failed so far.

Engel do NOT have eco throttle control. Engel generators rev full bore or half throttle. Much more noise than Yamaha or Honda.
Engel will not run fan or motors as square wave. If you have power failure at home you cannot power your fridge or freezer.

Yamaha is pick of small generators.
Yamaha has cast iron sleeve, Honda has aluminium bore
Yamaha has proper fuel tap, Honda has no fuel tap and if you carry in vehicle always stinks
Yamaha has decent sized fuel cap and strainer, Honda has tiny difficult to use fuel cap
Yamaha has near double fuel tank, Honda has small fuel tank
Yamaha has bigger motor and revs lot lower than Honda
Yamaha is 2dB quieter than Honda. 2db is significant.
