Looks like I may have a fuel pump that is on the way out. My 95 Patrol (4.2 EFI petrol) would not start yesterday, it would wind over but no ignition. I had a bit of a tinker with the usual things, but could not get it going. In the end I decided to get my moneys worth and called the NRMA. The mechanic narrowed down the problem to the fuel pump. he gave it a gentle tap with a hammer and volla - it started. He explained that sometimes the brushes bind to the commutator stopping the electric motor in the pump from spinning - sounds fair enough! He also said that it might keep going for 6 seconds or 6 months - you just can't tell.

I priced a new one here in Canberra, they want $500! I was expecting about half that. Does anyone have any good sources for Nissan Patrol parts, I am also considering contacting some wreckers.

All help appreciated,
Jeremy

Hello Truckster,

Any joy with the fuel pumps, are they for an EFI? My poor truck won't start anymore - even the hammer trick is no longer working.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Thanks for the tip uppy, Jason Nissan was $85 better than anywhere I could find, and they only want $5-6 for freight/post to Canberra. I have ordered one. A secondhand one from a wrecker $350. BYW my truck has 170K and this the the first mechanical failure - pretty good!

I am expecting the pump to arrive today - all should be well after I put it in. As for mileage, I generally can squeeze 500km out of a tank in both city and highway driving (it does not seem to make much difference!). Have not done any significant towing, but recently went to the snow and driving against pretty strong winds only got 400km out of a tank.

Cheers,
Jeremy
