Hi, im a new member to the forum. I have a '93 2.8 diesel 4runner, 5 speed and lately when reversing up my steep gravel driveway ive been hearing a rattle noise. At first i thought it was stones being kicked up and hitting the side steps but then today at the beach it did the same thing! Any ideas as to what is causing this? i havent noticed any other issues with the gearbox, in first gear up the driveway its fine!!

Check if the pinion nut on the front of the rear diff is tight and the lock tab is still bent over. That's my most likely guess of the noise! You will have to unbolt the tail shaft first!

thanks loxsmith!, have never removed one before but will give it a go! reverse gear makes no other noise other than when wheels are slipping so maybe it could be a simple thing and im just thinking the worst eg gearbox failure!
