My wife and I have a slight dilemma, we have been planning a trip to the cape for over 12 months and had intended in travelling with our club. unfortunately our club dates do not suit the school holidays of our youngest so our intention is to leave Cairns on the 11th July and proceed north and return to Cairns 7th August. This means however that we will be on our own, not that this usually bothers us. Our vehicle is well set up, we are self sufficient and carry suitable emergency equipment (Satphone and EPIRB) and have reasonable (never enough) experience, still there are some reservations on travelling north on our own, not that you are ever really on your own. Apart from the obvious precautions has anyone any advice or recommendations.

Cape road status

Check the above link to ensure the roads are open.

If they do open, you will not be alone at that time of year.

In July, your biggest problem will be the traffic, not the isolation.
Just go and enjoy.

CSeaJay - I do object to that statement - Easy to shoot the messenger - Its not alarmist just reporting the facts as they are to date.

Sorry if you do not like the news but I suggest when you make a comment like that is you ring up get the latest info and post why you would make such a comment.

Cheers Tony

You sound as if you are sensible in your setup and planning. I have no hesitation in recommending that you simply do it alone.

Get the Moon's book (available on this site and at camping stores) and have a read. There are the obvious precautions and good advise. Even without the book, with a good map, some research and common sense you should go through without a problem. In fact the best advise are from fellow travellers coming from the opposite direction when you share a camp and a beer

When in doubt (ie which water at Nolan's, or deep mud at Gunshot) simply look at the others doing it, enjoy and take the bypass.

Isolation is not going to be a problem, there are many people around, and the majority are only too eager to help.

You will have a ball, it is a magic place

Cheers,

CJ

If you were planning to go up the OTL just wait at the first dip/creek after burgers at Bramwell Junction and within 20 min some one will be along ,we ended up "joining"a group of 2 other vehicles which became by the next day a group of 5 vehicles for the next 3 weeks . Great fun ,shared camps ,meals and drinks round the fire , and the other 4 vehicles all adults all even enjoyed having our young un [9yr old] at the time as the group mascot.

Mandj.. Go for it. I went on my own ( so I thought ) in July/August 2009 and had a ball. Xtrail Tugging a Tvan. Went up via the coast ,returned inland. I met so many great people only to willing to befriend you If you can find the time to spend a night on the way up or down or both, call in to Laura. On shop, One Pub and a great camp site. One of the only Pubs I have been in where you can leave your Cigs, Phone, Wallet on the bar and it will be there when you come back from a smoke or what. Got for it

Geoff

I looked at the thread on the Cape Yorker forum - At this time it is still not sorted. The PDR is not a Cook Shire Council Road it is maintained by Road Teck.

The other roads mentioned are maintained by Cook Shire Council and are still to be closed at this time.

I will try to keep you up to date on the original thread

Cheers Tony
