On the weekend I went 4 wheel driving in my HJ80. I did not have the Radio turned on and I could hear a rattling growing noise coming from what I think was the transfer case when using low range at very low speeds. The noise was audible on overrun mainly. There is no noise at all in High Range. It was like a severe gear rattle.

The vehicle has done 470,000km and I dont know if any repairs have been done previously. I do know the vehicle has been 100% Maintained throughout its life.

I know the gears are large and would expect some noise. I dont think they would be like this from new as people would have complained about the noise.

There is no noise in neutral (roll over noise) when depressing and releasing the clutch so I think the actual gearbox is fine.

Is this a normal noise that just develops with time or could I have a problem.
Thanks

G'day Wayne,
How is the oil level? Might be worth changing.
My 80 from new was very noisy in high range 1st especially driving it down a back lane with a bit of echo.

Cheers,
Bill

Wayne,
sounds like the idler shaft in the transfer case.

At 470,000k I would think the gearbox and transfer would need overhauling.

Have a good one

I would put some Nulon, in your Engine,Gearbox,Transfer case and Diff and see if there is any change in the noise level.
