Gday all,
Like many toyota owners with live front axles, mine is leaking again from the wipe seal area.after only doing 60,000kms since replacing them. One side is leaking olny. In the 11 years ive owned it ive had them done about 4 times and im getting sick of it. Does anyone know if im able to buy a brand new diff housing? Im guessing that the area the oil seal sits in is out of round, either the axle has caused this or something else. So im looking at getting a new housing or if anyone else has any suggestions, id apppreciate it.

Hi. Have you used genuine Toyota seals? They have a "floating" centre that oscilates with the axle when it moves off centre during turning. It also allows movement from the axle when cv joint runs out of centre. Regards,Bob.

Gday Toyocrusa,
Yep, I get toyota to fix the problem as i havent got the patience to do it my self. And i would assume they use their own genuine parts.
Cheers

One thing that is often neglected whilst doing the axle seals inside the diff housing behind the wipe seals, is that the bush that supports the front cv, and axle often wears, and allows the axle to whip, and thus no matter how many new seals you fit, they eventually leak, or leak straight away.
So when its apart next, get the front bushes replaced inside the stub axle, there not expensive, and easily pressed out, and new ones in.

Also, check for blocked diff breathers too.

Dont need a new housing, just to find whats causing the leak.
I assume your leak is diff oil mixed with the moly grease of the cv and swivel hub assy, and not just a bit of excess moly grease which will work past the wipe seal with normal use.

i got my bronze bushes off ebay for less than $50 delivered. Now i just need to do the wheel bearings and finish off my extended breather, replacing the seals.

P.s brake parts fit as the thread is the same, don't forget to clamp them tight thou!!!!!

Gday Trainslux,
I get toyota to do the repairs. Would the bush's come in the kit? Yes it is oil dripping, and the extended breathers are ok.
But like i said this will be the 5th time ive had them fixed and yes im trying to figure out whats causing the leak. Obviously putting a new wipe seal kit in it isn't fixing the problem. Maybe its the bush your talking about.
Cheers

bush brought from Neil from Roodogs 4wd spares. Roodogs 4wd spares.if you are up to the challange of rebuilding it yourself, then here is a couple of websites.frontend rebuild

i'll be doing my front end aswell. i've still got to get a 54mm socket and bearings and seals, most likely buy a kit for it. about $200 and No the bush doesn't come with it by the looks of the pic's i've seen.

Hi Long haired Nomad.
no the bushes do not come with the kit, they are a separate item.
If you dont add grease to the swivel hubs, the bushes eventually go dry, or the grease dries out from not being used etc, and they wear out.
Easy to check for wear when its apart.
Hopefully the alignment of the hub is not out, by placing the shims incorrectly, and causing premature wear on the seal.

I would hope that the people doing your work are doing it well, as it seems to be leaking far more often than it should.

It takes time, but is not a difficult task, worth doing yourself, and doing right.

Clean down the front diff with a pressure cleaner before you start work on it, makes it far quicker and more pleasant.

I had the same issue with my old lux 89 SR5 2.8D, would weep then start dripping from the passengers side swivel hub, I had it looked at a few times untill I found a top mechanic at 7 hills here in Sydney (not sure where you are) Total Care 4wd run by a bloke by the name of Jason, great guy, really know his 4wd's and had it fixed and never leaked again, he used genuine parts but instead of that black/grey/silvery looking crap they put in he used a different type, he said that black crap is old tec now ?? I have no idea not a mechanic but it never leaked again and I had no issues with any thing else related to that job he did. Fantastic service Regards Steve
