Can anyone tell me why the auto-tent is so named? It is a 10' x 10' canvas tent with white walls and green roof.

What I knew a an "auto-tent" from way back was a tent about 3.5m square with only a centre-pole although some had short poles at each corner.

In recent times the term "auto-tent" seems to be applied often to other types with some degree of automatic erection.

I don't think the term "auto" related to the American "automobile" as although Wikipedia lists 13 tent types it make no reference to "auto-tent". They were probably British or European in origin and I seem to recall seeing a number of images of them in English journals in earlier years. Look at any illustrations of Jousting Tournaments and you will see them on the field. They were also popular for armies in the past.

But to return to the question....... no, I don't know why they are so called.

Cheers

Hi,
perhaps you needed an 'auto' to carry the thing.
The bag for our 12'x12' was about 3' long and 2'6" across, and then the poles - man they were heavy, 24 poles about 3' long and 1" dia, and the main pole was about 2" dia and in 2 sections of about 4'.
Then the pegs, about 30 of them, all steel rod about 3/8". The wall pegs were about 9" and the guy rope pegs were about 1'6".
Nearly forgot the ropes, 2 for each corner and one each for the 8 poles in the walls.
It could take an hour to put it up and get it straight by myself.

Did I ever mention I love my 30 second OzTent?

cheers
