We are in the final stages of planning our trip over to Broome in June.
Just wondering what the Buchanan hwy and the Buntine hwy are like to use to get to Halls Creek or would we be better going up to Katherine and then down.
We will be towing our camper.
Thanks in advance

G'Day Ross,

I did that trip back in the late 80's iin a Toyota Corona wagon wasn't bad then. can't imagine it would be any worse now. As long as its not wet you should be OK.
Check the road conditions in the Articles Tab should give a fair idea of current conditions

Ross,

We did the Buchanan and the western part of the Buntine in 08 and found them both to be good roads, especially the Buchanan. No problem for a well set up camper. Friends also did the whole of the Buntine and found it OK though corrugated in places, which is to be expected.

But that was 2 years ago so you would need to check out current conditions.

Which way you actually go depends on how much time you have and what you want to see. The roads west of Katherine are very scenic in places, as is the western end of the Buntine. The Buchanan is mainly a road for the cattle trucks and not that scenic from memory.

Happy travels,

Val

We travelled the Buntine between HC and Wave Hill last August.

Were just behind the graders and, for dirt, it was a very fast road at that time. There are a good few scenic spots betw the WA border and HC. You could request the mudmaps from the HC tourist office - they might fax or mail to you?

Cheers.

We did that run last year from Halls Creek to Dunmarra.
Apart from the 70 km stretch from Halls Creek through the ranges the roads are very good. Very narrow, winding and corrugated until just past Palm Springs.
Sadly Morrella Gorge has been shut off by Nicholson Station so don't plan on camping there anytime soon.
There are good camp spots on the Victoria River and there is a road side camp @ 20km North of the Duncan Road turnoff.

I doubt you will have any trouble if your camper is properly sealed against dust.
