Hi all, we are hoping to travel from Central Coast NSW to Charleville next week.
Would appreciate any feedback regarding the road conditions at the moment. We were thinking of traveling from Moree, Mungindi, Thallon, St George, Balonne, Charleville.

Hi Paul and Cathie

If you look about 6 posts down from yours you will find at least some of your answers.

Cheers,

I travelled some of that section of road on Sunday.

Moree to Mungindi is sealed and in good condition,

Mungindi to Thallon, is sealed and in below average condition due to the recent flood. I drove through 2 sections of water about 150mm deep but about 30-40m wide, by next week it will be dry. Some of the road surface is non existant, so be prepared to go from a great surface to a very poor surface (usually in the floodways ;)

Thallon to St George, is sealed with below average road surfaces in a lot of places. The Nindigully area is the worst section, I cruised along at the speed limit but slowed around Nindigully due to the surface damage.

That is all I did on Sunday.

My Father just did St George-Cunnamulla-Charleville-Mitchell-St George this week for work in a Ford Territory (works for the 3 Councils, Balonne, Paroo, and Murwah)

St George to Bollon (not Balonne;) is sealed. The approach of the western side of the Bridge in St George is well below average. Other than that it is of reasonable condition.

The Bollon to Charleville road is listed as open but with extreme caution. It has not been maintained and is still to be fully inspected and repaired after the flood.

I would recommend that to get from St George to Charleville to go via Mitchell then across to Charleville. The Mitchell - St George road is sealed and in average condition, areas of concern are in the floodways.
Alternatively go from St George through to Cunnamulla then up to Charleville.

Hope That helps

Cheers Kev

Thanks Kev,

Will take your advice and either go via Mitchell or across to Cunnamulla.

Paul,

Going via Mitchell is probably the shortest by at least 100kms.

The Warrego highway has just been reopened to all traffic (it was restricted to a 5t limit) so I am assuming that most of the damaged sections in the Mitchell to Charleville have been repaired (only took 3 weeks).

Another point to consider, the grass on the road verges is about 3' in height and most of the guide posts are hidden. Makes for some interesting travelling during the day let alone at night.

There is still a lot of water lying around so wildlife movement near the road is minimal, although expect the unexpected.

The road verges are also very soft so if you need to pull over pick your spot or you will get stuck.

Thanks again. We always expect the unexpected, but will be more alert now. We'll also notify friends who will also be traveling the same roads, but not with us, to watch out.
