Hi Warren,

We traveled the central road last yea,r from where you are theres some
great places along the way on the central and getting there down through auski
villa to newman cue and such.
The book called the out back by hema will give you some great ideas, we are coming back the other way this year leaving in may from winton and going to perth.

If you need any info on this please ask, Regards from an ex NW rigger

If you like constant massive corrugations & washouts take the Gunbarrel, we did & loved it!
But, be warned, there is no respite!

Hi Warren
It does not matter which road that you take, both are very different and great drives. If time is on your side, then the Great Central will get you to Yulara in 3 - 4 days, while it will take 4 - 5 days to get to Giles on the Old Gunbarrel. Both roads offer great scenery and history. We have driven the Great Central many times and the Old Gunbarrel twice. If you choose the Old Gunbarrel, the corrugations are some of the best that you will encounter, but I knew it and still went back-WHY, the solitude and scenery. For a slower trip where your chances of seeing another vehicle, I would still go back on the Old. Below are a few picture from the Old Gunbarrel section

Cheers

Stephen

Nice pics!
Is that an open-air dunny on the breakaway on that last pic?
It'd have great views! :-D

Hi Joc
No I am afraid that it is not an open air dunny, but it is a cage to stop people from stealing the replica of the Late Len Beadells theodolite, with is located at the top of Mount Beadell. Here are a few closer picture from another trip.

Cheers

Stephen

Nice pics, can't wait to get going now. I guess the nights will be cold, but that will be a nice change after Karratha.

Thanks everyone for your advice....This forum and the people who use it are gold

Hi Waz

As an alternative, consider the Gary Junction route. This gets less traffic than the Great Central so is usually less corrugated, and is a lovely drive. Once you get into NT, you are on a section which Len Beadell described as the most picturesque in Central Australia. He lined up the road to get the best views of hills such as Mt Liebig.

G'day Motherhen, the Gary Junction route would be great but we are meeting up with friends from Bunbury so leaving from Laverton or Wiluna is easier. Great pic by the way. Thanks

Hi Waz

Both ways have some lovely scenery, and in all that openness, camp sites easy to find. The photo i put up this afternoon for the Photo Comp is not far from the NT border on the Great Central. Stephens photos of the Gunbarrell are wonderful too.

We would both second the Gary Junction Road. Certainly picturesque and a lot of Len Beadell history.

Hi Waz
We are leaving Laverton around July and heading to Alice. If you would like a 3rd vehicle let me know . We would like to travel in company rather than on our own.
We plan on going the Great Central Road to Alice resting up for a week to see all the sights , then doing the Plenty H/way to Boulia and on to Birdsville for family get together at the races.
Grey Nomads with a new Toyota Lancruiser Ute and a Kedron Offroader Van.
Cheers Geoff & Lesley

Ps if anyone else heading that way that wants company please give us a yell :)
