For anyone travelling up or down the Stuart Hwy in the first week of April, don't forget one of Outback SA's premier community events is on...the Coober Pedy Opal Festival. We attended a couple of years back on our way to the Anne Beadell and had an absolute ball. For a town that's taken 35 years to grow on me, I now find the place a beacon of outback hospitality. Yes it still has it's fair share of problems but the locals have embraced tourism.

We enjoyed the community events, the street parade and the gala at the footy oval (the only patch of green in town) culminating in the fireworks. So if you're up that way, it starts on the 3rd April. A great community event that certainly gives a taste of outback hospitality.

"Coober Pedy Opal Festival has opal displays and tours, a street parade, stalls, food marquees, fireworks, covers bands, novelty competitions, underground dugouts and amusement rides".

I was there in 1997. I also attended the International Food Fare and Gala at the Footy ground. The Fireworks show was still some of the best that I have seen. The band played through the pouring rain and we walked (kinda staggered) home with our feet caked in Opal mud. You are right Mick O, "a beacon of outback hospitality". Not to be missed if you're around town at that time.

Unfortunately not Hairy.

I'll be heading through in Late May on my way north. Still trying to get this new ute together.

I'll be there in a couple of days. Currently in Murray Bridge.

They really should bring it forward a few days.

We are planning to spend a night at one of the underground motels and then go onto Archaringa HS for 1 or 2 nights before continuing to Uluru
