Campers to Cape York

Thanks to everyone who has been supplying info, it's all good stuff. Questions the CEO keeps coming up with. I saw some of the road condiations on youtube from someones trip up the cape and they had their camper trailer. I have a good off road Camper. How far will I get with that. I didnt think I could get up there with it. So much to learn so little time. And water, are there pleanty of places to get water on the way.

Don't recall what you are driving but the Cape is not that difficult if you go up the Bypass. If you go across to Chilli Beach and come back over Frenchmans track the Pascoe River crossing would be the most difficult, not actually the river crossing but the rocky pull out after the river.

There are plenty of places to get water along the way at the roadhouses and Bramwell Stn.

The biggest problem we found was the dust from the constant traffic.

It might have been this video.

We took a CT all the way but didn't go on the OTT. Although I always reckon with a good truck and good off road CT should be able to go anywhere you want.

We never let the CT stop us going anywhere.

If you check the notes on the the video it shows where each section is. So different parts of the video are from different parts of the cape.

Yes we did use the bypass road. Only parts of it are shown on the video.

We did the cape in 2008 in a r50 pathfinder towing a CT took the OTL crossed Nolans Brook with 900 mm of water went over Gun shot had no trouble the Cape then was quite easy and if you walk the creeks and plan your assault on the rougher parts you should have no problems

Hello.

Have you tried the "capeyorker" forum ?
Has a lot of valuable information there.

Hi Kerrymac,

Did the Cape last year with a soft floor off-road camper behind the 105 'cruiser. We did the bottom half of the OTT up to Twin Falls, where we camped for a while. We did do a run without the trailers to Nolans Crossing and back just to see what it was like. I don't know whether I would risk Nolans's with a trailer as they had reportedly already 'lost' 17 vehicles there when we arrived - it's can be very tricky.

However, the bottom half of the OTT was quite do-able. We also did Frenchman's to Chilli Beach and had no problems although it was a good challenge. Just take your time, watch your tyre pressures and have a ball!

Cheers
Gerry

Hi Kerrymac,

We done the OTT last July with our off road camper trailer & had no problems. A little tight in some places, but other than that, it was pretty smooth going. I've added a few pics for you...

We did the trip in July/August last year with a soft floor camper, friends with an Ultimate. We travelled the full length of the OTL, south to north without any dramas at all. Gunshot was no problem and we got through Nolans Brook without coming to a grinding halt. Water depth was about 600ml, the sandy bottom soft and a little water still seeped through the door seals, even though we did not come to a stop. The 100 series Cruiser & Ultimate did it easy. For me, heading back north to south would have been more difficult with the trailer, particularly with Gunshot and a couple of other crossings. The PDR was fine, with just one horrendous section from memory being the Heathlands Reserve area? with about 50 km of the worst bone shaking corrugations I have come across. Apart from that, more then happy to take the trailer on the next trip to Cape York.

Great feed back thanks for that. I had a look on the Cape York Forum and saw some pretty horrific videos. Tell me it is not always that bad and safer ways of doing it than some of the guys got in over their "Depth"

Hi Kerrymac,

I don't profess to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Doing the Cape York trip was an amazing experience and on some sections, certainly tested the vehicle and camper (and driver!!) If we did not take the camper on the OTT, we would have missed out on one of the highlights. For me, it was an absolutely must-do part of the trip. If you take it easy and don't forget you have a tonne of camper hanging off the back, you will be fine. Obviously the water crossing depths will be dependent on the time you travel. If in doubt, there are bypass sections on the more difficult bits. The only hesitation I had was with Nolans Brook, but we walked it first, picked the best way through and came out of it fine. If it was too deep, I would not have risked it - for me though, the main issue was the soft bottom, and with the extra weight on the back, it was certainly something to consider. If you have any doubt, wait awhile for someone else to come along and see how they tackle the crossings. We found other travellers only too willing to impart advice, but don't take it all (including from me) as gospel, make up your own minds in the end.

As I said before, I still think, for me, doing the track north to south would be a different story - the snatch strap or winch would be getting a bit of use - especially with the camper in tow. We did not do Frenchman's Track and the Pascoe River crossing..that's reserved for next time. The rest of the trip was in essence easy with the camper on the back. Watching our speed and tyre pressures played a big part !!

As an aside, we were speaking to people at the ferry crossing who suggested Punsand Bay as the place to camp at the tip. We took their advice and were glad we did. We checked out the other main campgrounds in the area and for us, Punsand was the best..beach front camp site..a magic spot.

Enjoy your planning and trip. If you head up that way, you will love every minute of it, camper and all.

Cheers,

Dave
