Hi
Has anyone been to Fraser Island recently? I havn't been there for a for a long time, and would like to know if you are still able to, when
camping, have open fires, or are there restrictions.
Regards

Check the qld national parks site (derm).
You can't have open fires in general beach
camping areas anymore. You can have fires in the firepits at waddy pt and dundabara. You can have a 'fire' using heatbeads in a "fully enclosed" container in
the beach areas but there are regulations about what that means. Check the derm site or talk to the rangers for more details.
Some info here

Hi
And you have to bring your own fire wood, can't even burn the drift wood from
the beach.

YOU CAN HAVE FIRES ON
THE BEACH IF YOU KNOW THE RULES
i know everyone says you can't but yes you can, you just need to follow some specific rules which are near on impossible to find on the Nat. Parks (or whatever it's called these days) website.
basically you need to have the fire in something like a drum, that drum needs to have feet on it which keeps the drum a minimum height up off of the sand (i can't remember exact height sorry to say), this stops the sand from getting heated up. you need to have a grate in the drum and you need to only use manufactured fuel for the fire, so no timber, just things like sawdust logs and heatbeads, etc.
finally you have to remove all the coals / ash that is collected in your drum off of the island with you when you leave, you can't even put them in the
bins provided on the island.
follow those rules and you will be right, i know this because last time we were there, we did this and had a
Ranger call into our
camp one day and saw the drum we were using for a fire. all the
Ranger said to us was that the feet weren't quite long enough and drum needed to be X amount off of the ground. we then asked where exactly do we find the rules on their website relating to this, and even the
Ranger couldn't tell us.
good luck if you choose to look for the info., i couldn't find it last time i looked

forgot to mention...
we did the fire that way when we were there, because a mate knew about the rules. he just didn't know the height off of the ground rule.
