Hey everyone, i have a bit of a problem with my motor. I have a 1988 Hilux with a 4Y 2.2L petrol motor and i have a feeling its on its last legs, was just wondering if anyone could give me any tips or suggestions on what to do. I am trying to decide whether to overhaul the engine completely or just replace the whole thing. Any help on prices or motors would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Todd

Perhaps if you described the symptoms your motor is displaying we may be able to help you.

Todd, start by getting a diagnosis, i have heard through conversation on here that some of these motors have a coil in the dizzy cap, and this gives problems. A compression test will soon have a diagnosis as to whether its the motor or something other hanging off it...you will be able to get it refurbished easy enough. There are so many motors that will fit in there the sky is the limit....if you are thinking transplant, dont...just buy what you want and sell yours....cheaper and all Toyota reliability built in :)

Todd - I had one of those motors in a Hilux ute

Best thing is to get another car :-)

The motors are very underpowered, and they are not good on fuel.

You did not say if you had & to spend, but I strongly recommend you upgrade.

Under powered...Yes
Fuel efficent....not really
Realiable......VERY..!!!!

A very basic engine that is cheap to overhaul and will give thousands of hours of trouble free motoring. They are the equivalent of a Holden Red motor. Not overly techinical, but easy and cheap to fix.

FYI....most Toyota Forklifts run 4Y engines.

Well I have good news for you Todd, You can buy brand new crated 4Y motors for about $1400. Brother got one to replace his 3y, and a mate got one to replace a 2y in a 2wd ute.
They are made in china, but both where still going all right last I heard.

G'day woodsy8lux, how much money you put towards another engine or recon really depends on your personal financial resources and what sort of condition the rest of the Hilux is in and how much longer you will have a use for this type of vehicle. If you consider the drive train and body and chassis to be sound I would consider converting to a diesel, possibly a second hand imported, from a reputable dealer. Sorry no idea of costs, this is something you have to weigh up. Happy Days.
