We did the drive today with 2 4WDs. Excellent weather today and most of the days before, so dry and dusty tracks. The track is essentially more an unpaved road and accessible for almost any car with some bottom clearance. What we liked were the excellent picnic- and BBQ spots along the road ( I recommend Basin and Muirs
Lookout). What we did not like was the few
views along the way. From start to finish you drive over ridges, but all with tress on both sides, blocking an otherwise great view and trip. WOuld we do it again? Not for the drive, but we might come back for the
camping locations.
BTW, we used the book "4WD
Treks Close to Sydney". We found the book to be accurate and very useful.

And???????
There are some very nice locations for
camping in the Watagans, but not in the designated
camp spots who will find in the books......but I'm afraid I can't tell you,as it's the last remaining semi "bush" spots close to
Sydney........

Hi Marcel H
I live close by that area, and have done the trek twice, using the trek notes on this site. Did you go down to the Basin, then continue on, over the causeway? Thats a good short track.
The second time we went, we were trying out our new GPS, and found the trek file from here was incorrect. I intend going back, now I am more familiar with my GPS, and log the trek correctly, and submit it to Damian, the guy that looks after that section of this website.
In the trek notes on here, there are references to a few lookouts, can't remember off hand the names, but a good view from one in particular....
views back up to the lower Hunter Valley. Have a look at
Treks>NSW>
Watagan Mountains, and see if your route was similar, the book route may have not taken you past the lookouts.
I do agree with you though, unless you find the dedicated
lookout spots, you don't get much of a look at anything, except the bush... but that suits me anyway.
Cheers, Dave
