Here is the latest move on cheap camping.
http://www.tweednews.com.au/story/2010/03/29/showground-camping-ban-nsw-tourist/
It involves closing
Showgrounds to tourists in NSW.
I suggest that you all protest to your local member and include the URL above.
I have done so to my local Member.
To me it is a grab at the little mans cash.
I have stayed at many
showgrounds and in only a few have found their facilities lacking.
Then again I have found the same in van parks.
No wonder one goes for the alternative camping.
A p........eed of Dodg.

These "Business People" don't understand that there are three basic groups of Caravanners.
1 The group that will stay in Caravan parks most of the time
2 The group who will avoid caravan parks at all costs
3 The very small group who spend most of their time in caravan parks, but occasionally "
Camp Out"
The only ones these bans really affect is the third group as the first group will just go somewhere else and
camp and spend their money in the towns that appreciate them.
In Forbes we had a similar problem when the NSW Government, under pressure from local Caravan parks, implemented a ban on the use of a piece of crown land right in town.
The local council did the right thing and opened up another piece of land about 200 metres away that the council owned. The free campers seem to like it and there is heaps more room for more vans!

And
places like Blackhall that use the showground as spill-over from the Caravan Park...

Sometimes local Councils do things for a good reason. Our local Council closed the showground C/p because long term tenants thought they owned it....put up
sheds, dog yards, veg patches etc. The whole thing was a disgrace. But to their
credit they opened a very nice area on the creek in town to
free camping. Cold
showers &
toilets...48 hour limit. There are campers there every night & they
leave their $$$ in town....a good outcome methinks......oldbaz.

Doug , there is currently a bit of a s,fight going on in Barcy bettween the two c/van parks and the council over the legalities of using the
showgrounds as a
campground even though the
showgrounds are now dearer by a $ or 3 per night,,,

like oldbaz - our council (
redcliffe qld) had a problem with long term people setting up under tarps etc. the council removed them all. then opened up the
showgrounds for bona fide campers - esp people with big rigs and/or dogs. as i drive past there most days there seems always to be 20 - 30 vans there. friends of ours travel the 10 ks or so from their place to
camp there and say its terriffic and good value at 70 per week. excellent amenities too i am told

sorry news about humpybong... my wife works there as a volunteer.... its been closed for a couple of years due to bloody insurance issues. we were talking about it just about half a hour ago she is going to see what the story is on tuesday when she goes back to work... will post what we can find out such a shame lovely area right over the road from the beach. we were saying much less chance of vandalism etc when there are people actually camping there? beggars description. cheers
