Hi
Has anyone driven the
Sundown National Park track starting at
Ballandean past
Red Rock Gorge Camp ground?
I have a drive guide that says its for experienced drivers only and has many very rough and steep sections. We are thinking of this way at
Easter through to northern NSW..
thanks!

G’day HH,
If you have a proper 4wd i.e. one with reasonable clearance you will be ok. It’s a slow trip to the river so allow a day to get there and back.
Red Rock Gorge is not much of a
camp ground but is a beautiful
gorge, a short walk from the car.

Thanks for that.
We have a prado with a
suspension upgrade.
I was wondering with all the rain, if the river bed would be a no go.

Prado's good. Haven’t been there since the rain but the ground didn’t strike me as being boggy. My guess is that you’ll be right.

Hi,
I visited Sundown and camped by the river about 12 months ago. Since it is 12 months since my last visit I don't have recent experience with the road conditions.
I too was concerned about the drive into the park after reading the drive guide. What did I find?
Well for one the track is exactly as described - it is rough and it is steep in
places. But this just means you have to know where your vehicle is positioned on the track and in particular you need to know where your wheels are. 4wd 101 in my opinion. Drive to the conditions and you wont have any problems. When I was last at Sundown there were a number of vehicles towing camper trailers. This indicates how difficult it really is.
Hope this helps
Cheers,
Geoff

Hi HH, Yes the track is rocky and a bit steep in
places but not dangerously so.
Red Rock Gorge camp ground is not much but definitely take the short walk to the
gorge lookout.
Camping by the river is really good.
Toilets but no other facilities.
