I am sure there is a simple answer to this question- can I just clip some hose onto the top of the existing breathers, and run to a higher position with a filter attached at the top of the hose. Why I would need to replace the original breather, as long as I can get a good grip on the original breather to clip the hose on? Car- 120 Prado.
Cheers
Tim

Just about. Just as you said make the "hose" section longer. But move the small filter/valve thingumy to the end of the new extension.

The only thing with doing that is it allows another spot the
water can get in. Provided it is clamped properly it should be ok. Personally for the sake of an extra foot of hose I would just replace the whole thing. Just make sure you allow enough flex in the hose for it to move when the axle moves up and down over rough ground. I had a split in one diff breather hose and a mechanic replaced it for me when I had the swivel hubs done. The hose was tight when
park on the flat road. Any movement in the axle would have pulled the hose off the diff.

You only need to extend the rear breather. 120 Prado, like most IFS front ends is already extended. Get the Piranha kit and just lay the breather tube along the brake lines and then up into the engine bay high on the firewall
DO NOT forget to allow for articulation when laying the tube or you will pull it out the first time you move off dead level

Thanks Guys, I have just removed the stock breather, and will get a replacement part then run a longer hose off that.

You can save a few dollars by buying brass hose fittings. They will be in BSP & your diff will probably be in metric. The difference in threads doesn't bother the diff as it is cast steel & the brass fitting is softer. It will seal.
On the sons D22 Navara we used a brass 1/8 BSP taper with a right angle hose tail, reinforced hose & a small in-line fuel filter to keep any dust out. The filter is a bit of overkill, but it was only about $2.
We tied the hose to the handbrake cable to carry it away from the diff. I am not real fussed on that method myself. But it wasn't my call on this one.
Total cost was probably about $15.

Don't re-use the original breather cap - put a little fuel filter on, or a fish
tank aerator end or anything.
The idea of extending a breather is to allow it to breath IN when a hot diff hits cold
water - something the originals prevent, thus creating negative pressure in the diff and sucking
water in.
