Hi all, Its been a while, I have a problem with my gearbox, when I am travelling at just above 60kmh I will be in top gear, when I take the gas off to corner or to stop the gearbox will change down the gears, before it would also do that but I would not feel it, it feels like I'm driving a manual because the gear changes are so prominent.
I changed the oil, that's all.
At the moment I am running stud-less tires because I'm in Japan and we still getting some snow and ice on the road.
Any advice would be great.
Oh and I did go to the Toyota shop and they just want to rip the gearbox out and have a look and charge me $2500.
On another side note, I had my starter motor changed for free as it was a recall item, don't know it this is a world wide thing, just thought I would let you know.
cheers

ADAM,
If you have an LC other than the current model , suggest you become a memeber of www.outerlimits4x4.com, they provide great help and advice.

I had a similar problem recently and the cause was that they had pinched and cut an O ring somewhere near the filter in the Auto. Was allowing it to suck air and made kickdowns really thumpy

This was after an oil change as well but mine is a 100 ser with the 5 speed

there are 3 autos in the 80 series range, which one do u have? I would suggest you check the kickdown cable is not stuck in the full open position, which gives the auto full pressure.....if it looks ok, give Rodney at Whlesale automatics Bayswater Melbourne a call, he is the pro and will have an answer or direction.

If you have the overdrive button on the shifter, is the od light on the dash flashing when you select overdrive?? (This indicates a fault code is stored) could be accelerater tps switch, speed sensor aswell, guessing your speedo is working from the mention of speed.

Hi Dozer,
Thanks for the help and advise, I ended up in the Toyota shop and they stuck it on the diagnostics machine and a code 64 came up, in this gear box there are 4 solenoids and one of then has had it, they advised me to change all of them, the end price for repair will be $650.00.
I'm booked in for next week, you would think they could do it on the spot considering I'm in Japan.
Again thanks.

Good news re finding the issue. It is not uncommon for a solenoid to go. I would ring an auto service centre and get a second quote, because the solenoids are very easily changed once the pan is off... (which they remove to change the filter for a standard service)
