Hi all, particularly any diesel guru's.

I have a Nissan Terrano II 2.7 TD that, if it were a petrol engine, you would swear it was missing...Do / can diesels miss?
Does it hot or cold, doesn't appear to do it when under load just when cruising at a steady speed under 80kph.
I was told it may be an air leak in the fuel system or a dirty fuel filter so I put all new hose clamps on the fuel lines and changed the filter. That seems to have reduced it somewhat but its still doing it.
The vehicles done 190,000 km, doesn't use oil or blow smoke and the fuel consumption is unchanged.
It had a new No 1 injector and the other 3 serviced about 6 months ago.
Its also on gas (D-Gas) but "misses" whether the gas is on or off.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try checking the valve clearances, they sometimes close up during normal operation due to wear on the valve seats and valve faces.
(Quite common on Mazda/Ford WL 2.5 turbo motors)
This normally can cause a miss at idle & uneven running under light load.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks Tojofixa.

The clearances were set about 9 mths ago when I had a new water pump and all new hoses fitted but its worth checking again.

Your first mistake is trying to solve a problem which obviously needs some diagnosis by an expert in the field of Diesel fuel injection. Not the lay opinions of a forum.

My advice. Contact a diesel specialist and get their slant on things. It might save you some time and perhaps being sent down the wrong path.

Thanks Wizard1.

Thats exactly what I've done. Its booked in at United Fuel Injection in Redcliffe on 20/04/2010 but as I know nothing about diesels I thought that the forum might raise a couple of points that I could raise with the experts.

Hi Peter

My Terrano II had a hesitation (miss) @ 2000 rpm approx & recorded an error code. Problem turned out to be the electronic motor part of the Injector pump. Removed the pump & sent away for repair (nil exchange available) then re installed. My Terrano II is the 1997 version with the Hitachi MAF and Zexel Injection pump. In 1998 onwards the Bosch MAF & Pump is used & is better electronics I believe.
All the best

Don
Thanks for your information...
Had mine in at United yesterday. They couldn't find any thing wrong with the engine, injector pump or injectors..There were no fault codes on it..They did however say that it was electrical and they believed it to be the wiring of the D-Gas system which they pointed out was pretty ordinary(loose connectors, bare wires etc).
One of the gas wires is tapped into the electrical gizmo that controlls the timing of the injectors and they reckon that a loose connection or bad earth was interferring with the signal causing it to miss. They suggested that I take it to an auto electrician which I did, after going back to the gas place to find it was closed.
The auto electrician wouldn't touch it......So I brought it home and re did all the electrical connectors , earths and insulated the bare wires on the gas system AND that seems to have fixed it....Took it for a drive and no more miss.

Mine is a 1999 model.

Don, if you don't mind how about sending me your email address. Mines hazpet@aapt.net.au (hope this is allowed on the forum)
