Hi
Has any one stayed at Glen Helen resort in the NT? Is it as good as the brochure looks? I heard that it was run down and not worth staying at. Any info would be great.

Thanks Sue

Stayed for 2 nights in August 09 and it was fine .. only used it as a base for visiting the other gorges around the place but it was OK with a C&W band playing on Friday and Saturday nights in the bar ...
Amenities were OK not the best around and certainly not the worst either .

Cheers

We have stayed there a couple of times, the last being June 08, and as is with a lot of the outback "RESORTS", its not a new complex but for the outback traveller we found it fine.
As stated above they had entertainment, which we found great over a meal and a glass of wine.
Its a great area go and enjoy.
Cheers

Thanks Steve for reply. We're not sure whether to stay in Alice and then do day trips out or stay in some of these places. There are 5 of us and we want cabins which means booking 2 of them as they only sleep 4 if we stay in these resorts. At least in Alice we can all have one cabin/villa. Has anyone done it this way

IMHO...stay at the Mac Donnell Range Holiday Park - Big 4. You won't be disappointed.
Use that as a home base.Glen Helen is an easy day trip out.

IMHO they do not try very hard at Glen Helen.

Iam glad I did not decide to stay at the caravan park there. Cannot comment on the cabins.

Heli pad is in close proximity.

I havent stayed there in a long time, its not flash, think besser block buildings but Gel Helen itself is a nice place to stay and if you want cabin accomodation, there isnt too much else on offer in the western macdonnell rages. and then youre already there in the morning.

I just googled the website and it looks pretty much how I remember. but as PPs have said there is a heli pad right near the accomodation. you can definitely hear it but how much that bothers you is up to you, especially if you are up early and out and about.

Was there in Sept. Pretty tatty in appearance and the staff didn't try very hard. Restaurant was very ordinary.

But it's walking distance from the Gorge which is great to swim in, and a good base to explore the other gorges in the area.

Haven't been there for about four years. Not flash but OK. Pleasant people running it when we were there. A good base to explore the area.

Hi Sue

To sum it up its a dump couldnt pay me the camp there we stopped at Ormiston Gorge last year its a lot smaller camp ground but we found the toilets and shower very neat and tidy only problem we had was after dark with the Dingos but if you get there early in the day you should be able to find a spot

Hi Sue,
We stayed their in July 09.
The Word "Resort" conjures up images of a luxurious stop. If you are expecting a few luxuries then you will be disappointed. The services are are all very basic but passable. The helipad was close. The hi-light was probably how impressive the escarpment was lit up at night.

Gday,
Yeah, dozens of times.
It depends what your after? Its nothing flash but its alright.
I rate places on the staff and the temperature of the beer......not the paint colour.
All depends on how fussy you are...... Ill probably stay their again.

Cheers

In '05 we learnt that anything in the outback that says "resort" its code for "last Resort!" Eco also means that they just don't cut the grass!

Glenn Helen s a dump.

There's a free camp over the road by the creek - much better.

They made us camp next to a bloody grease trap next to the shed on the grassed area at the front, then the canadian cooks got drunk and sat on the balcony all night bitching about the other staff.

G.H. was the low light of an otherwise excellent trip for my family
