My sons 2002 GU has lost 5th gear,I have read all the info on the main shaft / 5th gear fault so dont need anymore .

Just wondering if anyone has an exploded view of this gearbox they could email or post on the forum.

Thankyou Vic

Nissan may still help you.
They did recently with a friends 2000 model.

Ring Nissan in Dandenong, unfortunately they have been treating everybody differently.
My friend ended up getting $1000.00, whereas others have had all the parts supplied, or had the whole job paid for.
I have forgotten the ladies name at Nissan, but I am fairly sure when you say what you are calling about you will get put through to her.
There is lots of info on the Patrol forums, including pictures of why they fail, basically the spline on the shaft is too short.

Good Luck!

PS: My friends vehicle was fixed by a non-Nissan repairer.

Gregory's Workshop Manual (No 519) covers it pretty well, w/- what I would consider to be very good exploded views ....

Here's a coupla pics lifted from the Patrol f o r u m (which the poster had previously posted on Outerlimits) >>>

Ed
thanks for the photo link ,its very clear why the problem is there, just makes you question why the hell an engineer would design it like that when it clearly does not have full spline contact ?

Vic,
My take on it is that it's a manufacturing defect (Q C issue?) rather than a design fault..

My understanding is that the short-splined mainshafts were found to have come from just 1 of 3 suppliers that Nissan were using at the time.. This can be confirmed by ringing Customer Service & quote the VIN, and they can tell you if said vehicle was one of those so affected... Presumably they would also have records of those repaired under warranty (?)

As for getting help from Nissan, well, good luck with that... seems to be a bit of 'hit and miss' , and a case of 'not what you know but who you know', it would seem ;-)

When mine ('99 build) went in late '04, the dealer fixed it, and submitted a claim to Nissan which was rejected (Bugga!!)
Dealer subsequently told me that they (Nissan) were covering them up to 5 years (from date of purchase) / 200,000 km ..
If I'd known then what I know now, I might have 'made a bit of noise', but in any case, the dealer must have had some sympathy in my case, and they charged me only what (they said) Nissan would have paid them for the repair ($900), so I guess I got out of it a bit better than some others have done...
(I have seen figures ranging from $1500 - $3000 being quoted for the same job)

Catch ya later... Ed

OUCH. You got stung. Repair kit is/was about $500.00 and around 6 hours labour. Unless of course when it let go it did other damage, but I've never seen that before.

Thanks Phil

I have had several conversations with Nissan and have been told that they are allowing a maximum of 6 years from purchase for good will warranty,I asked why some had been covered past this and was told there must have been a previous claim on the gearbox otherwise it would not be covered.
I think the who you know not what my come into play ?

Vic, below are some pics that clearly show the difference in spline lengths. Maybe copy the pics and send them to Nissan stating the gearbox was obviously "not fit for purpose"
Regards Andrew.
