Vic,
My take on it is that it's a manufacturing defect (Q C issue?) rather than a design fault..
My understanding is that the short-splined mainshafts were found to have come from just 1 of 3 suppliers that Nissan were using at the time.. This can be confirmed by ringing Customer Service & quote the VIN, and they can tell you if said vehicle was one of those so affected... Presumably they would also have records of those repaired under warranty (?)
As for getting help from Nissan,
well, good luck with that... seems to be a bit of 'hit and miss' , and a case of 'not what you know but who you know', it would seem ;-)
When
mine ('99 build) went in late '04, the dealer fixed it, and submitted a claim to Nissan which was rejected (Bugga!!)
Dealer subsequently told me that they (Nissan) were covering them up to 5 years (from date of purchase) / 200,000 km ..
If I'd known then what I know now, I might have 'made a bit of noise', but in any case, the dealer must have had some sympathy in my case, and they charged me only what (they said) Nissan would have paid them for the repair ($900), so I guess I got out of it a bit better than some others have done...
(I have seen figures ranging from $1500 - $3000 being quoted for the same job)
Catch ya later... Ed
:)
