I own a 1984 swb mk patrol with l28 engine, my transfer case won't shift between 2h and 4h while on the move anymore, and when it is in 4h or 4l it has a horrible grinding sound, my mechanic doesnt know what it is, and the transmission bloke said that he cant tell with out pulling it to bits,(i think he just wants me to pay for the labour). Has anyone had a similar problem or know what it could be?

My brother had a similar problem. The idler shaft on the transfer gears wears out on them between the front and rear outputs and bearings chew the shaft up, the selector fork had problems engaging with this. A hole new shaft and gear arrangement was needed, we rebuilt it ourselves had no problems after that.
The new shaft was expensive, maybe your best off finding a good second hand transfer. The four speed transfer is identical and these gearboxes ar getting cheap.

Thanks for the help, I will look for a second hand transfer, a mate said he'd help me fit it.
