Hi

Just planning the leg of our journey from Yulara to Chambers Pillar and am interested specifically on the Hugh River Stock Route.

How many hours should I expect to be on the stock route from leaving the Stuart Highway till reaching the Maryvale road ?

Thanks

Generally speaking it is a very good gravel road. You should sit comfortably on about 80kph or even more if that is your go. It's only about 65 k's, so less than an hour. Just watch out for long, fast moving trains!!!

Hi Rod

Is this imminent as rain is changing conditions at present in the region?

Are you towing?

We returned from Chambers Pillar via the Hugh SR in 2008 in mainly dry conditions. We were towing, and speeds varied but no different to any dirt road. Just watch for a few dips on the Hugh particularly if towing. A couple of them needed caution. I didn't record times, but it probably took us between one and two hours on the Hugh. We met a thunderstorm and just got back to the highway in time.

Getting to Chambers Pillar from Alice Springs, we had lunch at Ewaninga and got to the camp ground well before sunset. By far the worst bit was the last leg from Maryvale to Chambers Pillar.

I hope these times give you some indication.

Thanks for the replies. I'll work on 1.5 to 2 hours then which seems conservative. Yes I will be towing an offroad CT

Hi Rod,
Like all the above it is an easy track to tack with good signposting, just follow the signs. If it is wet, then like all outback road I would keep clear of it.

Cheers

Stephen

I should have said the sign on the Stuart hwy to Maryvale is only small and easy to miss. when i was there.
That sign is at the Old Ghan intersection.

Hi Rob
We did not find it a problem. Another way to find it is to say that it will be around 29 kilometres north of the Ernest Giles Road turn off, and like you have mentioned, 10 south of Stuarts Well or 101 south of Alice Springs. The most important thing is to keep an eye on your odometer reading and you will not be far out, after all the Hugh River Stock Route is a major, well used road and not a two wheel hard to find track.

Cheers
