When taking off in the newly aquired Jack in 07 for another
Kimberley trip, with
C/t on behind, 4 adults aboard, fridge full of coldies, (you know the feeling).......
We tooled along to
Balranald at 110kph & a bit more, & got a rude shock when
fuel use was about 19L/100. Cant handle that....we cry....
plan B....stay under 100
kph. Result fuel use drops to 15L/100....that's better. Have been away a couple of times since & have no trouble getting that or better.....by staying under 100 kph.. The only bolt on of any significance to Jack is a long range tank...140L.
Decided to run it out recently to get true range, non towing , & managed 1020 KM before light came on. Filled up with 120 L. I make it 11.7 L/100.....from the
dreaded 3.5 V6....and auto to boot. Same criteria....stay under 100 kph.
This "lightfooting it" works.....
Now for the car.....1994 Peugeot 405 auto......filled up with 65 L for 1000 km.
That's 6.5 L/100....that I can handle !!!. Both vehicles were not driven to achieve min fuel use...just cruised at 95/100 kph with gentle acceleration.
The moral of the story....slowing down will save you big fuel dollars..........
but we all knew that anyway, didnt we ? :))).......oldbaz.

Hi oldbaz,
We just came back from a trip to
Lightning Ridge towing an old Viscount camper with the '99 3.0 td Jack.
Cruising along at 100 to 110 kph I could just about see the fuel gauge going down. 16.5 l/100
Decided to do no faster then 90 on the way back from
Mudgee and as yet have not filled the tank but just on how far the guage has dropped I can tell that it is a major difference.
Another plus is that you dont feel as stressed after the drive.
As I saw on a sticker on a caravan the other day,
"if you wanted to be in front of me you should have left earlier"
William

Last towing trip out west saw my fuel usage at 23.5lt/100km so I dropped back from 140 to 120kph and fuel came back to a respectful 20lt/100km. If you want to save on fuel then get a t/d rice bubble (like a VW polo) and pack the tent. Plenty of vehicles returning greater than 10k/lt at the moment but I still can't go past my 4.2 dinosaurs that keeps on keeping on.
The
sign on the back of my van would read "if you want to be in front you should be driving this rig hahahahha".
All fun, Cheers,
Trevor.

I'll stick with William, Trevor, the idea of towing at 140 kph ,or even 120 does
nothing for my heartrate & even less for fuel usage. I'll wave as you tootle past
of course...:)))).......oldbaz.

Gees Trevor the wheels of the ct would not have been touching the ground lol.
Dont mind sitting on 140 in a work xr6 or similar, but sit on 95 to 100 towing thank you. Just done 454 ks towing my boat to 69l which I work out to 15.19l/100, most siting on 100 with a few ks of very slow crawling in high range first. This like baz is in a Jack 3.5, but manual.
Cheers Pete
