You haven't told us much. What year/ model? Have been a few ZD30 diesel motors blow but generally a very good vehicle. No major, or even minor problems with mine. (160,000ks) Excellent economy, comfortable and plenty of power.

looking at this stage 2003 to 2006? price & klms will be a factor Dual cab St, dx etc & was wondering if it was the same motor that is in the patrol that has such a bad reputation. Have now learnt all about the difference in the motors & the type of turbo fitted, but at this stage i might throw in the difference as there are some pretty hot prices on new 09 plated models but they have that little 2.5ltr engine
thanks for the reply

Mine is a 2002 STR and we love it. 125000ks on first set of tyres, still has original brakes, (checked at last service, still 40% left), recently done 11500 k trip towing 2t van to Cairns, cannot fault it. However, there is always,at the back of my mind, the ZD30 motor and its reputation for blowing pistons. Not as bad as the Patrol, but it is a different block in the Nav. Probably 90% less Navs blow than Patrols of the same vintage, possibly due to less sophisticated turbo and less power output. I would have no hesitation in going for the one with the 2.5 motor. Has more power, and less economy than the ZD30, but a better history than the D40 model.
To be truthful, if I wasn't a regular user of this site, I would be much happier with my choice of vehicle !! Knowledge gained from Exploroz makes me a little edgy about going on trips to the outback. But I guess out of approx a couple of hundred thousand Patrols and Navs sold in the last 10 years I guess maybe 1% blow up.
I'd bet on a 99 to 1 wager any day !!

Each of my 3 friends with them have had turbo & engine issues Vince.
THey have proved to have reasonably low fuel usage.

1 dumped his for a holden adventra , another still has his as its still within the 3 yr warranty period and he has used the warranty on many occasions now.

The 3rd traded his for a 2.5lt diesel version , only a year old but he likes it a lot.

Also broken front shocks mounts on 2 seperate occasions , they are generally not that strong.
