Mine is a 2002 STR and we love it. 125000ks on first set of tyres, still has original brakes, (checked at last service, still 40% left), recently done 11500 k trip towing 2t van to
Cairns, cannot fault it. However, there is always,at the back of my mind, the ZD30 motor and its reputation for blowing pistons. Not as bad as the Patrol, but it is a different block in the Nav. Probably 90% less Navs blow than Patrols of the same vintage, possibly due to less sophisticated turbo and less power output. I would have no hesitation in going for the one with the 2.5 motor. Has more power, and less economy than the ZD30, but a better history than the D40 model.
To be truthful, if I wasn't a regular user of this site, I would be much happier with my choice of vehicle !! Knowledge gained from Exploroz makes me a little edgy about going on trips to the outback. But I guess out of approx a couple of hundred thousand Patrols and Navs sold in the last 10 years I guess maybe 1% blow up.
I'd bet on a 99 to 1 wager any day !!
