I'd second the Cooper ST for a general purpose track and dirt road tyre. At 90/10 with nothing technical, you might even be better with the Cooper A/T.

Cheers Mick

I wont touch the Cooper ATR again. Deadly in the rain!. Unless Coopers come up with a miracle, apparently there is a new version called the LTZ or ATZ which is meant to be better in the wet??.

Have to agree ,I have the older 604's ( 2nd set) and they have been trouble free. have done interstate trips with the van , up thru the Centre, Finke , Birdsville, Ccamerons corner etc , have not been in much mud.
very happy and they are only $180.00 for 9R x15.
Cheers Des.

I think the BFG AT is a clear all round 4wd tyre winner Johnny but in your case of on road with a bit of sand it is not the best and I'd go with the 693/4 as others have suggested.

There are good reasons why tyres like BFG AT have so many copies.

Hi Robin. I have the BFG AT's. What happens when you use them in sand. Something to do with the 3 ply walls not ballooning enough? Thanks for any info. Bob.

Hi Toyo

The issue is the sharp edges which tend to cut into sand a little more than say 693's.

The BFG AT excel in the gravel roads that form much of the outback which makes for safter driving.

Actually , even the last issue of 4wd action concludes this from whats appears to be a comprehensive test.

An additional point I would make is noise level - measured on a meter BFG AT are as noisy as equivalent tyres however the characteristics of the noise is such that its even distributed such that there is no detectable pattern and hence they are in effect quieter across a wider range of surfaces.

Both General and silverstone make knock off copies now.

Hi Johnny,
I've had my Desert Duelers 604V 31x10.5x15 for over five years now and they've done over 65 000k's, probably got another 10 000k's left in them.
I do about the same as you, 90% road, 10% sand/off road. On road I run them at 44psi, a little to hard sometimes, but hey life's a compromise. I do rotate them every 5000k's. I've been very happy with performance, towing my work trailer, the horse float and our camper. I would love to get another set.

Pray tell where does one buy such a fabulous beast? Not ready for new tyres yet but anything over 80Ks is incredible 'mileage' for an all rounder.

Gday Bazooka, Other people on here are also getting over 100,00km from their tyres. The hilux is pretty light and most of those k's are highway km's. Maybe its the way you drive that contributes to your excessive tyre wear, i dont know but thats how many k's i get out of them.

Johnny,

90% road and 10% sand, I'd suggest any old AT or HT will serve you well. In sand you need to deflate to bet a bigger footprint to "float" over the sand.

A chunky tread will dig in rather than float. Then churn its way down into the sand, throw more sand out and bog you deeper.

Just my experience.

Regards,

Jim.

I love the BFG A/T.
I got close to 100,000Km and they did the CSR (great in sand, most vehicles got bogged, we only managed this once due to driver error). The 3 ply sidewall is a great bonus. The others on the trip had staked sidewalls. The BFGs had slight chipping on the Gibb & Major Mitchell roads, but the Cooper A/T and STT had major sidewall splitting. More travel into the Pilbara and they handled the gravel without hassle. Their last trip was up to Cape York and return. They handle the corrugations on all the above trips without fear - just drop the pressure a bit and you will be laughing!!

Second that chris_s, we got 110.000 out of our first set of BFG/AT which included the CSR as well, our second set are going well also, have done Birdsville, and all through out there, Great Central, Gibb River etc and still going. A bit more expensive though.
Cheers

Pirelli Scorpion ATR streets ahead of the competition. Several of the 4WD mags have also reported this now. The Cooper's aren't very good on the bitchumen and certainly not in the wet, I replaced my Coopers with these new Pirelli's , awesome.
IMO BFG AT's are an older design tyre and better suited to dirt and gravel, there are so many better choices for a 90-10% combination. IMHO....

Hi JohnnyTasman,

My wife and I purchased 6 Mickey Thompson (Dick Cepek) FC-II tyres to use during our 2 month honeymoon to the Kimberley region.

That was in July/Aug/Sept 2007 and I still have not used either of the two spares purchased for the trip. The tyres have done approximately 35-40,000k since 2007 and the only issue I have had is one lug come off due to not airing down on a local 4wd track.

I have found them to be great tyres for both on and off-road and would highly recommend them.

Hope this helps,

Jason.

I've run a set of the FC2's as well. Good all purpose tyre with plenty of tread. Not good "off track" due to the thin sidewalls but then so are the Cooper ST's BFG or anything less than a Toyo. Then again, if you not going bush bashing, they'd be fine.

Go with the Bridgestone Dueler the 963's they are made in Australia, they were recommended to me by the Guy who runs "Top End Tours" so he should know, I did the Great Central Road, Gibb River Road, with out any problems at all, Tyres are a bit like Girls we blokes see them all differently other wise we would all be after the same one......lol
