Hi uppy.
I cannot recommend mounting the Phillips or any other radio for that matter in direct sunlight as the extreme heat will only lead to dry joint problems later on. Also any plastic will become deformed.
My 50watt vhf rig is on the centre console and gets very hot even when covered up. ie sola tint and sun shades.
See you next week.

Hi Uppy,
I'm just installing an olde UHF myself too,
I was thinking of screwing some brackets to hang it under the front console/dash (got a HJ47 cruiser so the added mess will look just fine)
but then the leg room is a bit more constricted
so
Now I am going to make a simple bulkhead up above the windscreen, you can get fancy ones fitted for over $100, I'm just thinking of getting a length of ply which can flex enough to bend it into the gap above the front section of door frames and then flatten out in place.
Then the UHF can go there, screw the handpiece thingy holder on up there too, then there will be extra storage room for maps etc up there. Should work even for big old radio contraption like yours, if your vehicle has suitable ceiling situation.
Probably will have to make a bit of an edge to stop things crashing down on all those bumpy tracks.....
