Hi, not sure if anyone can help or point me to an old thread, but our problem is I need a long hitch tongue for our LC 200 series, as now it is lifted and bigger tyres, we need a drop of approx .250mm to pick up the van hitch, and no one seems to do them? We are in
Perth and tried Martins and Parkside, but anywhere will do as I will just freight. Any help greatly appreciated.
Mark

Mark
What you are proposing might
well be unsafe as
well as illegal, extending/increasing the towball position in relation to the actual hitch receiver/towbar will result in a greatly increased load/leverage on it and the mounting points to the vehicle. You would get away with it just towing your garden variety box trailer but for anything heavier you might be in trouble.
What you are doing is the same as sliding a piece of pipe over a wheel brace to give more leverage except in this case it is in the order of tonnes of leverage.

I think what Mark is talking about is dropping his hitch down to the height of his trailer, not extending the hitch out horizontally from the tow bar assembly.

Doesn't matter where you extend it to, up, down or sideways it gives greater leverage/load

Contact Hayman Reece direct. They are very helpful & will advise you of the correct fittings and advise dealer location.

Maybe so, BUT, Australian regs are generally much higher than those in the US. Same applies to many aspects of enterprise, finance, tax, firearms, modified vehicles etc. etc. US has a long way to go to catch up. (Sorry coouldn't resist).

YES I'd agree, Australia has become the most over regulated, government controlled, nanny state in the world. Not something I'd be particularly proud of.

You could try something like this:

Or this (you'd need to invert it of course):

Or this:

The older model HiLuxs used to have a very high towbar which often resulted in them having an even more exaggerated gooseneck than the ones shown in these last 2 ebay items.

Mark,
Not sure which van you have but if it is a Jayco Sterling like
mine, you may have the coupling on the bottom of the draw bar. Jayco won't raise it because they say it then won't comply to the regs which states the coupling should be between 350mm - 470mm above ground. Thats ridiculous I reckon and probably suitable for sedans/station wagons but not for 4WD's.
The LC 200 is also very high..., the towball tongue is way higher than the LC100 and Toyota couldn't care less..they say they build their vehicles for other than those that want to tow an Aussie van...mmmm.
Anyway, I have had my 200 raised and also had the tow coupling welded to the top of my draw bar and now have even raised the ball slightly on my HR hitch and get the whole rig level and load distributed properly.

Hot a drop hitch from Repco I think it was. They are definitely legal, I use it to tow my Ski boat.

Why not lower the vehicle and use the same tow hitch. You will be a lot safer

Gday,
Just go to your local boilermaker/welder and ask them to drop it 250mm?
It really is quite simple.
Cheers
